Trying to view my CCTV Security Webcam

I am running a clean install of Windows Vista with all the latest updates.
Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are at their default settings.
No other firewalls or antivirus programmes have been installed.
In my loft I have a dedicated server (no firewall or antivirus) running a CCTV security camera setup.
To view the CCTV, it is necessary to connect to the server via a router using Windows Explorer.
The server then downloads a Webcam application onto the connecting computer and the CCTV can be viewed.
HOWEVER …
If I have Avast 4.3 running in default setting, my computer cannot download the Webcam application or view the CCTV, Internet Explorer just hangs.
I have fiddled around with the Avast settings, and found that if I go to Resident Shield, Customise, Resident Task Settings, Basic,
and delete the port 80 entry in the transparent web scanner redirected HTTP ports box, my CCTV webcam loads and works perfectly.
My query is: what does the transparent web scanner redirected HTTP port setting actually do?
By deleting the port 80 entry, have I compromised the antivirus protection?
I hope someone can enlighten me.
Thanks, Guaitai.

First I take it you mean avast 4.8 not 4.3 ?

Of course removing the port 80 redirect would work as that is the same as disabling the web shield. So, yes you have slightly compromised your protection. The port 80 redirect does as it says on the tin, it redirects port 80 traffic into the web shield proxy so that it can scan the http traffic.

I think the problem is using the HTTP port for what is effectively streaming that may not fully comply with the HTTP protocol and that could be the problem.

In the Web Shield, Customize, Basic tab, Ignored addresses, enter the IP address of the CCTV (presumably the router IP), see image and see if that works. Don’t forget to reinstate the port 80 redirect that you removed.

Thanks DavidR.
Yes, it is version 4.8 (pressed the wrong key - I’ll never be a typist)
I have followed your instructions, entering the server ip address into the ignored address box and reinstating port 80, and everything appears to work okay now.
As an alternative connection, I am also using a DDNS service, so I will try that out later, entering that web address into the ignore list.
Your statement regarding redirecting port 80 traffic into the web shield proxy is all gobbledegook to me, as I’m not very good with networking. I must do a bit of swatting up on the subject.
Anyway, many thanks for solving my problem.
Guaitai.

No problem, glad I could help.

The web shield uses a localhost proxy (temporary location where all http port 80 traffic is redirected so it can be scanned before it is placed in the browser cache, so it can be viewed. If avast finds an infected file, it can alert and abort that connection so it doesn’t get into your system. That is the purpose of the redirect.
