Turn the providers on again

I recently tried to download the Windows Vista Service Pack 2, but have failed multiple times, all of which resulted in me doing a system recovery. I looked around and Microsoft said to disable your Anti-Virus, so I did. Problem is, it failed again and I cant find out how to turn on the providers i.e Web Sheild, Resident Sheild, etc… Could anyone tell me how? the little blue Avast! ball is not in the toolbar. (I terminated the providers so that they would stay off during the reboot, hopefully allowing the correct install) Is there any possible way to turn them back on?

By the way, when its updating the service pack, it goes to a black screen and runs through file names then stops at:
!! 0xc0190002 !! 632/58102 (kernel32.dll)

Edit: I tried running Avast! (the splash screen that tests memory and startup items) and after the splash screen the GUI does not pop up… whats going on? I also tried turning Avast! on from the Windows Security Center and that doesn’t work either. Since I got Avast! its never, ever failed me. I don’t want this to be the first time.

bump Seriously? No one can help me?!

Make a repair, go to uninstall then chose repair

In all the service pack installs I’ve done (On Mine and others computers) I’ve found that it’s best to install all service packs BEFORE you install any Antivirus products. Or if you already have an A/V installed, completely remove it before the install.

This will save many headaches.

If repair does not work, try an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.

Ok. Here’s the deal. I booted my computer today and found that the little blue Avast! ball was there. I tried turning the providers the same way I turned them off (On-Access Protection Control) and it just froze avast and not even Task manager could close it. So after a few restarts and a trial-and-error process, I finally decided to just turn it on via the Windows Security option. It worked and I turned the rest of the providers on without incident.

Thank you guys for your help (even though it was not necessary). I hope Avast! will remain the best at what it does and that all its staff members and forum staff will continue to provide excellent service and do an outstanding job. I love this Anti-virus as it has saved my computer many times (viruses already on my computer). I will continue to use and support Avast!

It’s normal. It’s due to self-defense module of avast is on.

The rest, well, a mystery for me ::slight_smile:
