It started about a week ago whenever I initiate a MBAM scan. This is about the same time MBAM upgraded to v. 1.12. The Show details box is already unchecked in Avast Providers, and I found if I disable Avast Self-defense the messages stop. I would rather keep Self-defense turned on, so how can I turn the messages off?

Yes, these pop-ups first appeared with avast 4.8.1192 (welcome to world of beta testing). There is no way to turn them off without - as you have found - disabling the self protection feature.
The avast team have reported in another thread that, given the confusion these messages are causing, they are considering some further changes for the production release.
We will have to await their decision.
