Yet again I have returned to Avast and what an improvement
When I first installed Avast I had a warning voice whenever there was an attachment (potential virus.) This seems to have disappeared and I can’t find any settings for it.
I notice when I try to edit the messages for incoming and outgoing mail. Whatever I put goes on both incoming and outcoming messages. Is there any way of customizing them individually?
we will require more information you should have been given options when the virus was detected what did you choose. - check the avast! Log Viewer there should be some information retained there.
there is a different message for infected and clean emails, for both text and html emails, you need to select those for editing, avast knows if the email is outbound or inbound and modifies it slightly to include either the inbound or outbound details.

You have misunderstood. There wasn’t a virus. Whenever there was an attachment with an e-mail, an american femail voice came from “no where” and said something along the lines of: There is an attachment which could be a virus. Do I want to allow it? This of course would happen frequently, as I have my mail to accept plain text only, so any html will show as an attachment. This warning has now disappeared, but I rather liked it.

Let me clarify: I realize what you have put above, but say for instance I edit the incoming message to “Another good job done by Avast” This message also goes on the outgoing message without me editing it.
Check that you have not disabled avast! sounds in the Program Settings, Sounds.
Check that you haven’t enabled silent mode in Internet Mail, Customize…, Advanced.
There is no incoming or outgoing message, but Infected or Clean message for both Text and HTML emails (so 4 messages), each of those has ‘%INBOUND=Inbound%’ and ‘%OUTBOUND=Outbound%’ depending on if the email is inbound or outbound avast ads data relating to that. The ‘% %’ are special avast strings that can’t be edited by the user
When you edit the other text that should appear in outbound and inbound emails.
Send yourself an email and check it out.

I have checked these and they are all in order. If it wasn’t for the fact my daughter was there at the time and heard the voice, I might be inclined to have imagined it. :-\

I’m not sure we are still on the same wave length here yet!
I am talking about what you call “clean” message. Let’s try again. If I wanted to put say “Avast has done another good job on incoming messages”, this might not be suitable for outgoing messages. I might prefer for example to put “Avast has scanned this outgoing message for virus’s” for outgoing mail. I cannot put two different messages for incoming and outgoing messages.
I’m stumped too if that comes up empty- you could try sending your self an email with an attachment, http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm you could also send your self an email with say a text file attachment, but change the file type from .txt to .exe or .pif these may initiate the warning and if so you should see the warning window and sound.
One other thing what is the Heuristic sensitivity? and check the custom, customize settings and ensure both of the items I have arrowed in the image are ticked.
That is what I have been trying to get across, there is no specific message for Inbound or Outbound emails. There is only infected or Clean - so I can’t see how it is possible to have a custom message for this purpose.
I think I have found out what the problem was with the voices/sounds. I had the bright idea of checking in media/sounds to find that the option of no sounds was active. When I put it on Windows default sounds and ran the Eicar test you said, I got the warnings complete with siren and male voice, no problem. I don’t know what had changed the default sounds to off. Although I have this with a virus/fake virus I still don’t have the original sound when I first installed Avast. (The one with the female voice warning of a potential virus.) As a test I sent an e-mail to myself in html, as that was the format my friend always sends his mail in. Because I have my e-mail set to plain text anything html is an attachment. The female warning voice did not activate on this test like it did in the beginning, so that is still a strange thing. I know it isn’t a matter of life or death as the virus test works which is the most important thing. Yet it is puzzling as to where that other “warning” voice has disappeared to.
The image didn’t display so I a don’t know what it was that you had ticked. My custom settings are on high.
Regarding the inbound/outbound message editing: I was under the impression that because there are different tabs for pop;smtp;news etc that you could edit independently for each of these. From what you say that is not the case, and whatever you edit will be shown on all, is that right? If so I don’t see the point of having the “format of the notes” in each tab.
I didn’t miss the lady’s voice, I rarely hear it usually on tests so I only noticed when I did a test to confirm what you said a male voice.
The other warning voice you talk of would only be heard when accompanied by the warning window in the same way as the eicar test. So if you didn’t get the warning window you won’t get the warning voice. Html attachments and/or html formatted emails aren’t necessarily bad/infected. So if there is no warning or voice there is no suspicious or infected element.
Some of the warnings about attachments, etc. are likely to come from the Heuristics Tab (unless the attachment is detected as infected using viruss signatures) of the Internet Mail so what warnings you would receive would depend on your settings, it is possible to customize that area too.
I think the format of the notes being in each tab has more to do with a single template for the three tabs as you would have to click on each tab to see and edit all notes.
