Two Small Bugs With 5.0.418 and Workarounds Remain in Version 7!

Here’s a bug report,

This should be easy to fix for the next build:

1.) Today was the second time running Windows XP (SP-3) where after I opened Avast to check on the status of the program, I could close out by X’ing out of the program. But when I came back to the computer about two hours later, I saw that Avast was minimized on the Windows Taskbar. It was not possible to open Avast 5.0 from the minimized position. Note that this issue was also present on the previous build, 5.0.396

2.) When having the Avast GUI open, on Windows XP, it is not possible to right-click to close it from a minimized task bar position. This was also an issue in the previous build, 5.0.396.

The workaround is if you see Avast minimized but you don’t have the interface open, just open it again from the desktop and after it is open, right-click by X’ing out of the program. This step will close all of Avast.

Also want to report that updates and responses to them have been great. There’s just a couple of little small picky bugs like the issues above that need to be patched and than we should be all set.

Jack 1000,

I have experienced a very similar (if not the same) thing on a random basis. Normally when I open the avast interface, and then open the browser, the browser window will take the focus and an Avast “minimised?” entry appears on the task bar. If I then click on the “minimised?” Avast entry, Avast will take the focus and will appear over the browser window. When this issue occurs, clicking on the avast entry does not bring the avast interface window back up. As you say, you can open it from the desktop.

It doesn’t happen very often at all and so far I haven’t been able to find a repeatable pattern that might help locate the problem. Whilst it is only a small thing, there is something there not quite right, but it might not be all that easy to fix if there is no clear means of replicating it.

Update,

I did submit a Support Ticket with my verbatim text in the OP as the content of my message.

Jack

I went back to view my Avast support ticket earlier today to see if there was a response and now it is gone. Strange! However, yesterday it showed that they got my ticket so all should be OK.

Jack

I had the same issue happen again just now. The bug seems to only happen from time to time when Avast is opened following a boot up or a PREVIOUS opening of the program during a Windows XP session. The bug seems to happen, if it happens at all, on the update following Avast being opened manually. It’s possible that on the next update attempt we get that “Minimized Avast Window.” that cannot be closed. The fix remains very simple. Just open Avast from the desktop and than close it again. The minimized window, that originally did not close, disappears like nothing happened.

I submitted another update response ticket on this issue. Will keep doing so if and when the issue repeats itself. The more the tech team sees reoccurance of an issue, the easier it might be for them to fix. It would be cool if this bug was fixed before the release of Avast 5.0.477, or if a later release could soon fix the bug replacing 5.0.477.

Jack

Had that bug again today,

Minimized Avast that could not be closed when right-clicking, had to open it up through the Desktop shortcut and close it again. (Version 5.0.462.) The thing is, I am never here when the bug happens, because it is very rare. When it happens again and I am here, I will be able to provide a more detailed account. (Hopefully.)

Jack

Just want to report that the bug reported in my original post, occured today again in 5.0.507. Occurrence seems to be about one month increments.

Jack

Well happening once a month I would say is some what strange especially if this were a bug, I would expect that condition to be permanent rather than intermittent. Whilst there is no doubt you are experiencing a problem, it is much more difficult tracking down an intermittent problem.

I regularly minimise the avastUI as I use it for reference (in the forums) and am frequently closing it using the right click menu when my taskbar gets a little cluttered and so far I have not experienced this problem (from when the right click option were introduced in the avastUI).

Surely clicking on the tab on the taskbar (see image) would open it and you could use the X to close (rather than have to use the desktop shortcut) ?

I’ll try that next time David,

Thank you. There were a few others that experienced similar issues as this post indicates, but as it is such an intermittent thing, like you said, it could be too hard to track down. I don’t want to make a pest of myself with this little bug or glitch. I will just live with it, and only report this issue back if the Window doesn’t close or something. Thanks again to you and the team for this help.

Jack

You’re welcome.

One of the other problems is I don’t know if there is any information that you can gather at the time it happens to identify a possible cause, which makes it even more difficult.

Old Avast issue with 5.0 remains in 6.0!

This was an issue for me last year, where we could not pin down why this was happening or when on my Windows XP system. Long since than, the drive has been reformatted, is very clean, and runs like a champ:

To recap:

A year ago, I was having an issue where sometimes the Avast window would mysteriously show up minimized in unexpected situations and despite Memory Dumps, installs and reinstalls, and even reformatting the hard drive, I would get a minimized Avast on the screen, where the only way to close it is just to reopen the GUI and close it.

Well, I got it twice the other day, so I did an update to version 6 and I get the minimized Avast window again. As you will see in reviewing this thread, we have never been able to pin down this issue. Avast 6.0 seems to be working, so I am going to try to watch and pin this down to see how it happens and why it happens. I will be investigating if this relates to the update cycle or having IE open almost all the time, which we usually do. Take the time to go back and review this thread.

And if anybody sees this issue in 6.0 and can catch this minimized window business, hopefully we can get a memory dump when it happens to find out what might be causing this.

This really goes back a long way to something that can’t be pinned down for study, just yet. So I am replying to this topic just in case others have this specific issue.

Jack

This has been going on for several years, but it remains so infrequent that it has never been squashed. I will bump it up. Where I talk about 5.0. just change the instance to 7.0. Have had fresh reformats of hard drive since than, and version 7 is working very well. Submitted memory dumps last year did not find a thing:

Here is the situation. Read the posts above for some other customers that are having this same issue. If you guys still get it from time to time, reply in this thread. Here you go: I wrote the quoted stuff about two years ago.

Jack

Here’s a bug report. (The isse has existed from versions 5.0 to 7.0) It seems to happen after the GUI has been opened up several times without a reboot of the system, but it only shows up maybe once every six months.

I see this from time to time but only after a new install.

Just got it again. I am going to do my daily reboot.
