I updated 5.0.545 Free to 5.0.594 Free and all appeared to go well until I atttempted to open the UI while offline. In 5.0.594 whenever AvastUI cannot establish an internet connection displaying the status page freezes. It eventually displays but takes several minutes. This also happens if the UI is already open and you attempt to go to the status page. Every time the status page is loaded it requires a connection to load in a reasonable amount of time. This was not the case in 5.0.545. This seems like a pretty big problem especially on a notebook or netbook. Is this by design? I tried a complete uninstall and a fresh install with the same result. Ended up going back to 5.0.545.
Did you reboot after the upgrade and/or install?
Have your settings changed in the GUI?
Clear your cache, reboot again and see if this helps. No, this problem is not by design. Others are not having this problem.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, I have done all you suggested and no settings in the GUI have changed.
I just did a fresh install on another pc and the behavior is exactly the same. Using no firewall other than my router it all works perfectly with an internet connection. When I cut off the connection the status page takes a really long time to display. I’m sure it wants to make a connection to display the advertisement. If I toggle the connection on my cable modem I can make the behavior change back and forth.
And you did not have this problem with the older version of Avast?
No. 5.0.545 does not exhibit this behavior. I’ve been using Avast for years and have been using version 5 since it was in beta. No previous version has done this.
Hi,
We have experienced the same thing. But, it takes a few seconds to open the gui. According to what I sense, it is due to the ad. It is not going to change if one reboots or re-installs.
By default it is the Summary > Current status tab which is opened. Open some other tab and close it. It will open, the next time, with no delay.

Unfortunately that is not my experience. any time I open the Summary > Current status tab there is a very long delay when there is no internet connection. With the GUI open if I go from any tab to the Summary > Current status tab it will delay even if I have had that tab open just a few seconds earlier. 5.0.545 and earlier versions do not do this.
What other security software do you have on your machine?
I meant to say that open some other tab and close the GUI. The next time you open it, there wont be delay in opening the GUI. But the delay will be there if you go to the status tab, again. We know that earlier versions do not produce any delay in opening the status tab.
May be the routine for request to ad from avast! servers are called before the status tab contents are displayed. But I really have the slightest idea what they have changed in this version when compared to the previous. In fact, VLK did mention that there were some changes in the GUI, but I really don’t know whether it was this.

Vlk comments re: new version: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=61045.0, but I’m sure there have been updates since then re: languages added, etc.
On my primary pc besides Avast I have Comodo version 3.0.22.349 firewall only. No Defense + or any other features besides their firewall. No other resident security software. MalwareBytes is installed but not resident. OS is XP Pro SP3.
On the second pc where I replicated the problem there is no other security software. It is my test machine that has a fresh install of XP Pro SP3.
If I do as suggested and open some other tab and close the GUI then reopen the GUI the default tab is the Status tab and there is a very long delay.
Are you sure? Because, when I close my GUI and re-open it again by clicking the avast! tray icon, the previously opened tab opens up. I mean it remembers the previously opened tab.

Oops, my mistake. Avast does open in the last used tab unless the pc has been rebooted. In that case it defaults back to the Status tab. I just saw another post where the user is saying that Avast is interfering with the network drivers. That appears to be the same problem stated differently.
If I monitor my pc when the GUI freezes AvastUI is making repeated attempts to do a DNS lookup. Eventually that fails and the Status tab displays. This issue doesn’t happen with 5.0.545 and earlier.
Yes, I have read that topic too. But it is not related to this since, his is related to updater trying to attempt to connect(and may be fixed, if, tried to delay the time to check for update) and yours is the ad routine(Should be fixed by the devs @ avast!).

Thank you. I do hope it gets resolved soon. I’ve had a great relationship with Avast AV for several years. Any other AV and I would have uninstalled immediately and moved on. Avast is a great product. If they choose not to resolve this it will however be a deal breaker on my notebook.
You’re Welcome.

Hello. I signed up on this forum to express that I’m having the exact same problem as ralan and it just started this morning. I’ve been using avast free for years and have always updated the program when prompted to do so. I run XP pro service pack 3. Like ralan I had no problems with 5.0.545 or any other previous versions. This has to be a problem with 5.0.594. I certainly hope the developers will fix this issue.
