unable to access some websites.

Hello all, I’m a huge fan of avast and it has always been my first choice and my only recommendation to people. however recently I upgraded my pc to be able to handle the newer games, Since this update avast has been blocking websites such as: Google, Facebook and Youtube.
I’ve tried the ‘fix’ function, adding exceptions and even turning off the webshield.

How do i know its avast? It wasnt blocking them before i installed it and once I uninstalled it, problem solved. however I feel naked without avast. does anyone have any ideas or fixes for this?

btw, forgot to add…
I’m running windows 7 64 bit and the newest version of free avast

if avast is blocking sites for any reason there should be a warning pop-up … do you see that?

do you have a firewall…if so what?
if you have a firewall with outbound protection, delete all avast rules in it, reboot and create new rules when it ask

No pop-up is displayed when trying to access pages. I have windows defender as the only firewall but I disable it.

Try a repair…Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click “avast”>click “repair”>reboot.

I’ve tried the repair program, didn’t work.

as of right now I have avast uninstalled to allow access to these sites.

attach OTL diagnostic log. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

and Windows Defender is not a firewall…

Please see attached OTL attachment.

I built my computer yesterday, I doubt there is any malware infecting it yet as all I’ve done is download drivers from company websites.

OTL is a diagnostic program, so does not only show malware problems.

There a few minor errors with windows updates but I can see no indication of why it is blocking those sites, do you get any popups or warnings at all or does it just time out ?

Is it just certain sites that are being blocked with free access to others ?

I recieve no notification about it being blocked.
I’m unable to access, Google, facebook and youtube all else is fine. I tried accessing them on my laptop and no problems there it’s just from my desktop. I uninstalled Avast yesterday and now i have not received any time outs on webpages.

updating windows should help fix those errors, correct?

Yes update windows… You did not have any exceptions set in the URL blocker ?

url exceptions? as in wont block them?
I had added google in the url exceptions but it had not helped.

Updated windows, 140 updates and reinstalled Avast free. Problem still persists and only allows access once I turn off the webshield

I have the same issue…when I disable sheilds…the websites work

well it appears as though I’ve solved my issue, however im not sure if my solution will leave me vulnerable.

for Win 7, 64 bit:

  1. control panel/system and security/windows firewall
  2. Advanced settings
  3. inbound rules, I added ‘AvastUI’ from the avast folder and told it to allow connections
  4. outbound rules, I added ‘AvastUI’ from the same folder and told it to allow connections.

and I now appear to be able to connect to google, facebook and youtube without disabling the realtime shield.

Bump,

Any thoughts on security risks? By doing what I described above.

You posted nothing about your OS, not even a screenshot of “blocked”. Bumping won’t help when there’s desperate lack of info.

P.S. Windows Defender is NOT a firewall, and you should NOT use it together with Avast.

I did post information about my OS, Theres nothing to screen shot unless you’d like a blank white browser.

“P.S. Windows Defender is NOT a firewall, and you should NOT use it together with Avast.”
Also already addressed, I’ve previously stated that I’ve disabled it already.

The problem is being caused by the most recent version of the “Avast Online Security” v9.0.2006.53 - i.e., the Web Reputation plug-in…

Currently this seems to block functionality to ALL facebook games. After disabling it, functionality returned.
