They would usually come up but now they don’t come up in my tray. All I did was shut it down once, and then tried starting them again, but they do not appear in the tray anymore. ??? How would I go about fixing this? :-\
Have you installed any antispyware products recently? There are a couple - recommended in this forum - that seem to kill the avast startup entries for new avast users.
avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut).
As Alan asked, what other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?
Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.
Well, I don’t use the Tea Timer on SpyBot, nor do I use the AdAware’s AdWatch. However, I did put a shortcut to ashDisp.exe in the startup folder and it works! How simple. : Thank you all for your help.
That works for the duration you are logged on, when you reboot, depending on what killed it off, it may be gone again.
If it is removed on reboot, you will need to identify what is causing it and it is usually other security based software, the list I gave are just a number of the usual suspects.
Welcome to the forums.
Other ways to correct this would be:
- Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
or - Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
or - Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
This is how it should be in a ‘correct’ avast installation.
The option is checked in the “Appearance” tab, and the shortcut in the startup folder works everytime I shut down or restart the computer. I did look for the registry, but I got to “CurrentVersion” and then couldn’t find “Run.”
That is fine if it works after reboot. It looks like something deleted the Run entry in the registry, if the icon used to appear before, the shortcut in the startup folder should be OK.
Okay then. Thank you all again for you assistance.
