Unable to boot Dell Latitude D610

Unable to boot DELL Latitude D610.

Appears that WINDOWS XP is loading them screen goes blank and then error message appears -

"LSASS.exe - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Will not allow me to do anything else. Can still gain access to Set Up and Bios etc but even booting is SAFE MODE is not working - have a black screen with “Safe Mode” in corners, but that is it.

Have been recommended to use an AVAST product that can scan the system before booting, but have no idea what it is called or how to make this happen (burn to disc etc???) Very, very, very green to all this.]

Please if anyone has the time to help, I would be so grateful.

???

Do you have another antivirus installed?

Two antiviruses will conflict.

Not sure of the Antivirus in use. The DELL belongs to a friend of mine. I just want to know how if it is possible to perform a scan at time of boot - I have been told there is such a product, but have never used before myself.

Thank you very much for your reply.

You could try a repair install:

If you want to do a virus scan, download and burn Avira AntiVir Rescue System to do a boot time scan.
