Unable to browse Web....

Hi all,

I’ve just intalled Avast Free 5.0.677 on a new installed WinXP SP3.
My firewall is Xp’s firewall. It authorized avast to connect to the internet.

I’ve done all avast’s virus definitions updates but still can’t connect to the internet unless I uncheck the http scan box in web agent.

I’ve try to uninstall and reinstall avast following this method:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

==> No success…

I’ve try to deactivate xp’s firewall without any success too…
Any advice/idea?

Thx!

XP’s firewall has zero outbound protection, so shouldn’t be getting in the way.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have installed, anti-spyware, etc. ?

Thank you for answering.
I’ve nothing installed yet except the winXP hotfixes which some include anti-spy. But nothing else…
Avast was the first thing (non windows software) installed on my PC.
I will try again later to reinstall all but any tips will be welcomed.

Other linked question: what does the web scan box in web agent part protect me from? What is its purpose? Am I protected enough to surf safely when I uncheck this item and start the web agent?

Thx.

Short answer, getting infected whilst browsing the internet, one of the most common routes of infection now.
