I just installed avast 4.6 and I have a weird skin (no play/stop button … skeleton head etc.) instead of the default.
Furthermore … the option to change the skin is grayed out from the menu and even if I install a new skin frow the web I’m still stuck with the weird looking skin.
No it’s not a sign of infection… it looks more like a sign of corrupt installation of avast! antivirus.
There is an skin I created named avast! Pirate skin. Of course that is if you meant on avast! Pirate skin I am referring to. If it’s not what you meant, please post a screenshot so we can see what are you talking about.
avast! Pirate is not a weird looking skin. I made it on avast! user’s request, and it deals with avast! thematics. They wanted soemthign different and I created it even that’s not my style. I like to make those pro-looking skins more…
avast! is a pirate word for STOP! which explains a lot, so they asked me to make a skin which associates with pirates… which I did.
Btw, you do not need Play and Stop buttons, it is not a music player. Besides, there is a START (scan) and STOP button up there in the top middle part of the screen.
Try repairing your avast! installation or even better, completely uninstall avast!, reboot, and then reinstall it from the scratch.
For sure that skin shouldn’t be set as your default just simply because it’s not the part of standard avast! package, so there is not chance skin was there instead of the default one… you had to download it and install it yourself.
It’s a fresh install.
I doubt it is corruption since I uninstalled and deleted everything and re-downloaded avast and installed it a second time with the same result.
Like I said, beside the fact that I have no idea of where that skin comes from, the option to change skin is greyed out.
Here’s a screenshot of what the “weird skin” looks like. (and I didn’t download it from anywhere)
That is not a Pirate skin as I first thought… that is Low-Res skin and to be true I have no clue why is it started on your system instead of the default skin. Maybe Alwil guys can shed some light on this one…
First of all, you will have to post your computer cofiguration, specifications like type and speed of processor, motherboard, video card…
Also very important, what other security related software you have installed on your system ? I hope you do not have another antivirus program installed along with avast! on the same machine because if you do some searching in this forum, you would find literally thousands of posts explaining why it’s not good idea to keep two or more antiviruses installed on the same machine in the same time…
Also if you had some antivirus installed before, maybe you didn’t uninstall it properly… avast! just like any other antivirus must be installed on clean system without any single trace of some other antivirus utility.
EDIT: Oh yes, btw Skull icon is a icon that represents a VIRUS CHEST so no worries at all…
Btw, this is Low-Res skin and it’s installed with standard package:
The computer where avast is installed has an old video card that doesn’t support truecolor when my resolution is set to 1024x768. Since it’s the first time I install avast on that kind of configuration, that must be the reason why I never saw that skin before !!!
Thanx again !
(sorry for the inconvenience … even if I know there’s no such thing as a stupide question … I can safely say that this one was! lol)
No it wasn’t stupid question at all… you just were concerned that’s all…
But this will be a good lesson to you and to all other future forum members when posting something (asking for assistance). Always, always… best thing you can do is to start your posts with some information about your system, then we can find out what’s going on much, much easier…
In this case it was because of the old video card. Of course it is not able to show all those colors, and most of those skins are made using 24-bit BMP files or TGA files (16.8 millions of colors)
