Unable to check email since Version update?

I’ve had to disable the scanning of messages on my PC in Avast
Mail Shield since Avast recently updated itself from v4 to v5

Nothing has been changed on my computers as far as I am aware
and I haven’t had any problems before.
All settings in my MailWasher and Thunderbird programs are the
same on both computers.

Avast - V 5.0.594

Laptop:
Connects via WiFi to the Modem.
MailWasher and Thunderbird both check or download mail as
before.

Avast SSL Account Settings:
Host Name/POP3/Port 110/Encryption None
Host Name/SMPT/Port 25/Encryption None

As Encryption on my email account is ‘None’ I deleted both entries,
but after downloading and sending one email both entry’s reappeared.

PC:
Connects via cable to the Modem.
Won’t connect to the Mail Server with MailWasher nor Thunderbird.
Connection attempts ‘time out’ after a minute.
Connects o’k with Avast Mail Shield disabled.

Avast SSL Account Settings:
No Entries.

Added the same entries as on the Laptop.
Made no difference. Won’t connect.
Deleted again.

Any help would be appreciated.

A condensed version of my problem with Version 5 Mail Shield:

Two computers with the same set-ups.
Mail Shield is working on the one connected Via WiFi.
But not on the other one connected via cable.

Both worked before upgrading to Version 5.

There have been many changes since 4.8 to 5.0.594.

Please check this link to see if this fixes your mail issue: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=458.

If not, I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install[/b] to fix your problems.

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD (C:/drive):
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
    Prohttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
    AIShttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0). You will need to uninstall BOTH versions.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs” through Control Panel.
  5. Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot twice.
  7. Clean your computer up (clean up cache, temporary Internet files, etc.).
  8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
  9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
  10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro or AIS.
  11. Reset your settings, if needed.

Please post back how things work out.

Uninstalled and Clean Installed as per your instructions.
Unfortunately it didn’t help.
I am giving up for the moment and have disabled the
Mail Scanner.

Thank you for your help

Sam, did you read the

Did you read this article prior to doing the uninstall/install to see if this would fix your issue? If not, please read it and see if it does…may be all you need to do. Let me know. If not, I will offer another suggestion. Thank you.

Yes I did check.

As I said in my first post above:

Laptop: On WLAN
No problems with email.

Avast SSL Account Settings created by Avast:
My Host Name/POP3/Port 110/Encryption:None
My Host Name/SMPT/Port 25/Encryption:None

As my mail accounts are not required to be
listed as they are not encrypted, I deleted both
entries but after downloading and sending one
email both entry’s re-appeared.

PC:On Ethernet
Mail download attempts ‘time out’ after a minute
or so but work o’k with Mail Shield disabled.

Avast SSL Account Settings created by Avast:
No Entries.

I’ve added the same entries as on the Laptop.
Made no difference. Won’t connect.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked that your firewall is not blocking anything? Everything else is working correctly with Avast?

My other suggestion is for you to submit a mini dump file to the Avast Team for analysis. Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71.

Please, zip and upload the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file to this anonymous ftp server and name it uniquely: ftp.avast.com/incoming. They will analyze it and get back to you.

Hi SafeSurf

I think I have checked everything several times but may have missed something.
One thing I am reasonably sure is that it started after updating to the new version.
Having spent several hours now trying to fix this problem I’ve decided to simply leave
the email scanner disabled on the PC. I may give it another go when I have more time
in the future.

Thanks for your help

Sam

You can submit a file and Avast will analyze the problem. See the links above.
