Unable to detect microphone

My computer suddenly stopped detecting microphone and I can do voice chat. What went wrong and how do I fix it?

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Is this anything related to avast?
  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version?
  • Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.

To know how to post a screenshot, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

If you’re using Windows XP SP2, please, check also http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28579

Well you haven’t answered your own question but you have mush to get that information in how you asked your question, ‘computer suddenly stopped detecting microphone’ that can be the framework for a google search ‘computer stopped detecting microphone.’ Now that question returns many hits on a google search, http://www.google.com/search?q=computer+stopped+detecting+microphone, see if there is anything there that helps.

Thank you for your reply. My seriatim reply is as follows:

  • I don’t think problem is related to Avast! as it was working all right upto 3rd Sept.
  • I am using Vista Home Premium and it is uptodate.
  • I am running Avast 4.7 Home.
  • Configure microphone but it says it didn’t detect the microphone.
  • I don’t think any other security program is interfering. It was working up 3rd Sept, and on 4th Sept I see an optional update for Intel Graphic Chipset from Microsoft. I am not sure but it stopped working when I tried to do voice chat on 5th Sept. On 4th I didn’t try for voice chat. So I am not sure if the update on 4th Sept is the cause.
  • Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’. I see number of errors but I don’t understand much what they are but as I feel there is none relating to microphone.

If it worked before the update but seems to have stopped after it, them maybe using system restore to bring your computer back to a time prior to the update would be my first check. If that cures it, it's the updated.

Did you update to Vista or did the computer with vista pre-installed?

Won’t System Restore to 4th help in this case?

Thanx. How to do it?

Google is your friend…

You can also follow the directions I’ve outlined at MySharedFiles
for using System Restore from the Run command.
(It also works in XP)
http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/vista/System+Restore+From+The+Run+Command+In+Vista.txt

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > follow the directions

CharleyO,
This is for windows vista.
Open Control Panel then select Backup and Restore Center and from there select
System Restore or, simply run System Restore from the Run Command.

OOPS … sorry but I missed that important fact! :o :frowning:

Thanks, Bob!

Thanks to everyone who responded. System restore helped!

Thanx once again.
