Unable to install new Avast

Alright… I’m getting a little frustrated and need a bit of help here.
I’ve been fighting with the installer for Avast Internet Security for two days now, and I’ve searched out what seems like every similar thread on the forum and random advice column on the net and followed as many of the tips as possible but I’m not getting anywhere.

So. We bought the new avast (3 copy deal thingie), installed it on the brand spanking new computer with Win 7 on it, no problems. Now, computer number 2, with Vista is …(insert vulgar stress re-leaving language here)… Installer unpacks, gets to VPS, window pops up with the “preparing to install” message, and… nothing. Nothing! And this is where the frustration comes in. I’ve pulled out every safe security removal tool I can think of, shut down all unrelated programs and processes and banged my head off the desk once or twice. None of it seemed to work. No seemed about it. It didn’t work. Oh. And I rebooted. Tried that one too.

What’s the next line of action? What very simple step am I missing?
Please help!

I’m not a native Vista speaker, but did you run the installer file as an administrator?
Any other antivirus installed on the Vista machine? An OEM trial, perhaps?

Any hint in the windows logs? Firewall disabled and not just stopped? Administrator priv for install account? Push install from ADNM of local, permissions on the c$ share? Just throwing out stuff I have had to deal with while converting our enterprise from McAfee to Avast over the last week.

Sometimes having previous security software (current, past, trial versions) on the machine will prevent installing new security software from working correctly. Please tell us what you have or had in the past for:

  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial security software
  • Other security software

How did you remove these software? The vendor’s uninstaller tools or other way (describe if another way)?

You can also try an Repair Avast:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

Check to see if your firewall is preventing Avast from in/outbound connection: Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access?

  • If it does, delete the entry for it and reconnect to the Internet. This should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Thank you.
