I am trying to install Avast 4.5 Home on an old AMDK6-2 with Windows 98 Second Edition. Everytime, I try to do so I get the following error messages:
12.01.2005 16:01:13 file: Extract: tried to extract ‘Lang.dll’ from pkg ‘av_pro_dll409’ but failed miserably.
12.01.2005 16:01:13 general: progress end - forced
12.01.2005 16:01:13 general: progress thread end
I’ve downloaded the installation program files with the same result. I’ve even installed the same installation file on a Windows XP machine with no problems. What gives? I thought this program works on Win98 too.
BTW, the same problems occurs with the Pro installation program.
HELP PLEASE!

Do you have enough free space on your disk?

Is 740MB free disk space enough?

It certainly is. Is it the same drive where your TEMP folder is located?
Is the installation file really the same (as the one you installed on WinXP)? What is its length in bytes?
Thanks.

Yes, its in the same drive where the TEMP folder is located, and yes it is the same installation file I used with Windows XP. This very same problem happened with version 4.1.
My drive is partitioned into 2 (C and D). I’ve tried moving the installation program into drive D (which has 102MB free) and installing from there. I made sure I deleted whatever files were placed by the faulty installation before I installed again. The same error happened.
This is the size of the file as reported by Windows 98
setupeng.exe
8.27 MB (8,680,872 bytes) 8,683,520 bytes used

How much memory do you have on that system? Try to remove registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Alwil Software, and delete avast4 folder on both disks if they still exists. You may also try increasing size of swap file in Control Panel - System - Performance - Virtual memory. Set minimum and maximum size to e.g. 256 MB, restart and start setup again. Then you can set virtual memory size to default value.
