Unable to load user profile after boot time virus scan.

Hi,

I downloaded an update to Avast Free a couple of days ago. A quick scan found a problem and Avast asked to do a boot time scan. During the scan, Avast asked what to do with several files (I think I told it to “Fix All”. Later when the system rebooted, my user profile was missing.

Is there any way to undo whatever Avast did, to attempt to recover my user profile? (The PC in question is running Windows XP, service pack 3.)

Thanks

Are you able to login into Safe Mode?

Are you able to login into Safe Mode?

Thanks for responding!

Yes I can login in bot regular mode and safe mode. (Safe Mode + Networking) When I login in safe mode, it looks like my old user profile loads… At least Windows doesn’t complain that the profile is missing, and all of my desktop icons appear on the desktop.

All the files that were removed will be in the avast virus chest. Just restore them for the meantime.

Avast UI>Scan>Bottom Right Corner>Virus Chest (quarantine)

Thank you so much!

There were 8 or 10 files that were newly quarantined. I restored them from safe mode then rebooted, and it looks like I’m back to normal.

It’s possible those files were infected…

Could you post a screenshot of the detections and that it is fully readable… of the virus chest.

Here is a screen print.

There seems to be a lot of files there…

I think the computer could be infected…

I’d recommend making a thread on this board…

Post a reply on that board and follow the instructions here :
