This is a problem I’ve had numerous times before, intermittently, and with 3 versions of Firefox (as they update) and no matter what I try I encounter the same dead-end page.

Hi Tarq57,
This could have to do with wrong settings of or incompatibility of extensions, Adblock ?? Install the Febe add-on for Firefox. Run it and make a folder for it in your documents with a date.
Then you could uninstall Firefox, after you saved all your settings with the Febe extension in a Febe folder in my documents. Later when you have installed the latest Flock browser, you can reinstall all of your FF extensions, favorites, etc. from the febe folder. Works easiest to transplant a browser with your own settings and tweaks. Difference FF is a Google-driven browser, Flock is Yahoo-driven, and is specially adopted for Web 2.0.

Thankyou for the reply. The only extensions I use are Noscript (Avast is in the exception list). IEtab (In which the Avast forum opens logged on, as it should), Talkback, to send FF problems back to FF, Tweak network settings, and DOM inspector.
I don’t have adblock; I use a hosts file to block the worst of the ads, and quite happy with it, too.
That the problem is intermittent makes me think it is unlikely to be a problem with the addons, especially considering that as part of the troubleshoot I’ve disabled them all when the problem occurs, and it makes no difference.
Interestingly, the forum page opened here with me already logged on, after clicking on the hyperlink in the email notification. And a fresh forum page does the same, selected from bookmarks (favorites.)
Also, I am not prepared to change browsers, since in all other respects it gives no trouble at all, just sometimes with this forum.
Hi Tarq57,
Check your hosts file, because certain malware can tamper with it, and block all sites of AV-vendors, and avast sure is one of them. Use hostess to check your hostfile. http://www.raymarron.com/hostess/

Already checked. (MVPS hostfile, has a resident AS/HIPS guarding it also). And no trouble connecting, right now.
I log on with no problems with Firefox 2.0.0.4.
Me too 8)
no problem at all here also
