Unable to open message attachment. Error code is 80004005. Unspecified Error.

After a recent Avast update, every e-mail going in or out causes the following message dialog to be displayed:

avast!: Unable to open message attachment.
Error code is 80004005

Unspecified error

I’m using AVAST free 5.0.594. My system is Win7 64 bit and Outlook 2007 (12.0.6514.5000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6535.5002).

This is a problem that just started yesterday after an avast! update.

This problem is continuing. Even e-mails without attachments are producing this error as they are received. Any ideas as to what the problem might be and how to fix it?

I am getting this too, after upgrading from Avast 4 to Avast 5.

Its extremely annoying, every time I open the email client and then every time I send/receive messages.
I am using MS Outlook 2007.
If I disable the email scanner, the problem goes away, however I still want email scanning on my system.

Help!

Is someone from Avast going to answer this?
I’m about ready to uninstall and get some other anti virus software, this is ridiculous! Apparently this was resolved in version 4.8, bollocks, I just went from 4 to 5 and now have this irritating error all the time!

nzmiket,

Your post was probably overlooked because you added onto someone else’s thread that was started 4 months ago. What you should have done was to start your own thread/post.

To start a New Topic of your own:
Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

First I need some information about your system:

  1. What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
  2. What version of Avast did you install? 5.0.677 is the latest version.
  3. What product of Avast did you install? Free, Pro, AIS?
  4. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including antivirus (AV), firewall (FW), and other security programs? If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?
  5. What is the error code you are getting?
  6. Have you tried an Avast Repair to see if this fixes your problem:
  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.
