Unable to process Virus file

Avast has just alerted me to a virus as follows:

C:\System Volume Information_restore{BF2C5343-6208-4F18-92B7-E73E1C6C3E04}\RP2142\A0296571.sys

but when I try to move it to the Chest I get the following message:

“The Process cannot acces the file because it is being used by another process”
Cannot process “C:\System Volume Information_restore{BF2C5343-6208-4F18-92B7-E73E1C6C3E04}\RP2142\A0296571.sys” file

What do I do now?

The best way to get rid of it is to clear your system restore points and create a fresh new one.

  1. Disable System Restore

  2. Restart your computer

  3. Re-enable system restore and create a new restore point.

I suggest:

  1. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again like Jtaylor83 suggested.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.
