Unable to register Avast; license key not accepted

I am trying to re-register my Avast free home anti-virus. I’ve had it on this machine since 2010 and have never had any issues with it. When my registration ran out last year, I re-registered it with no problems. Now I need to re-register it again but it won’t let me. When I click the register tab, it just says “loading” and then never loads. I updated Avast to the latest version and rebooted my PC to no effect. So I requested a validation key to be emailed to me but it won’t accept that either.

Which avast! version are you trying to register?
Why won’t you go for the latest avast! 2014 available?

The version I am trying to register is 140713-1, according to the update screen. As far as I know, this is the most recent version since I just updated it.

Yes, that was the first thing I tried. I included a video of me trying it in my initial post to show how it isn’t working.

  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??

I am using Vista 64, service pack 2. I have no other AV software installed and haven’t used anything on this machine before Avast.

I think maybe I am just going to uninstall Avast through add/remove and then reinstall and try again.

Worth a try…

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

there might have been bad connection to our servers and the screen timeouts. Were you finally able to register?

No, I’m sorry to say I wasn’t. I uninstalled, re-downloaded and re-installed Avast but am still having exactly the same error. The “loading” screen never finishes loading.

Apparently the “loading” graphic that never loads is due to avast trying to contact an advertising server which it cannot reach. It is not an avast server, maybe doubleclick or google-analytics.

The avast key sent by email will only work in version 9.0.2018 not the current version 9.0.2021. You could download the older version of avast, register it, then install the new version afterwards.
