Unable to scan a file, scan stops

Hi, I’m a new user of Avast. It’s a great program considering what you get for free.
My computer has been slowing down lately and I’ve scanned it with multiple times for viruses and spyware etc.
However, every time I scan with Avast I get a message around 84% that says the program is unable to scan C:\WINDOWS\system32\xactengine2_8.dll. Could this file have something to do with my computer slowing down?
Also when this message shows up the scan stops and I am not sure whether it finished or not.

How do I fix this?

Yes, it could.
Are you using Windows XP/Vista?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If infected files are found, it’s safer to send them to Chest instead of deleting them.
This way you can further analysis them.

I ran the scan, and i checked the option to put infected files in Chest. But when i run scans i still get the same message of unable to scan the dll file.

At boot time? ???
Or normal scannings into Windows?

The file … xactengine2_8.dll … is part of the MS DirectX software. It is possible that the file may not be able to be scanned as it may be protected by MS or the file may be corrupt.

When avast can not scan a file, it will give a reason why. What was that reason?

at the boot time scan the scan ran normally, I think, I didn’t sit in front of the comp for the entire 3 hour scan. However, the regular scan states that it can’t read from the specified device. Other than the “unable to scan” message and the “cannot read specified device” the program says nothing else.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.
Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

The report file is created automatically in \Data\Report\aswBoot.txt

The result report says that the file cannot be scanned because “The system cannot read from the specified device.” Kind of repetitive.

Can you copy this file somewhere else? (e.g. using Windows Explorer)

i can find it in my local disk but not in explorer

So … find the file in local disk, right click it, select copy or copy to, and then copy it to your desktop or some other easy to find place.
