Unable to scan certain files and errors

I have been using Avast antivirus for a few months, working great, but now I have a problem.

When I turned the computer on monday evening(been gone on vacation), avast asked me if I would like to install new updates, so I agreed and everything went well.

Then the next night I did a standard scan for viruses and at the end a report with 2174 files listed. All of them had the same message. (Unable to scan). I didn’t make a copy of them but most were applications. I tried to send one of these files to the virus chest and it said there was an error and that it couldn’t do this.
When I click this message away, then the scan report shows no viruses found.

The only thing I can think to do is to uninstall Avast and re-install. Any more strange reports like mine since others updated their Avast?

I am not computer savy.
Thank you for your advice.

There are many legitimate reasons why files can’t be scanned (it should have given the reason why, password protected, etc.), can you give an example of a few of the files and location of the files.

What is your OS?

I run Windows ME OS.
When I run another scan I will give you some examples of the files. I have just never recieved a message like this before I installed the updates.
Everything else seems to be working correct, as far as I know.
I will run another scan this evening and I will give you examples. I know a bunch of them have (recovery) in them.
I appreciate your help.
Be back later with info.

Have you got AdAware and or Spybot Search & Destroy, because both of thes anti-spyware tools secure their files and backup/restore points like this.

I was all worried for nothing.
Sure enough the report was from Spybots archives.

Today I changed the setting to give me a report after a scan and I just finished the scan and had 2000+ files reported. Then I noticed where it would show me the report and all those files say Spybot, archive is password protected.
Unable to scan: Archives!

Thank you for your help. My Avast is working fine.

Happy to help, a belated welcome to the forums.

When you run AdAware and Spybot, anything that they detect and you opt to delete a copy is made prior to deletion so you can restore it if it was an error. These backups/recovery entries add the list of the total of files that can’t be scanned.

So you can do some house keeping and delete the backups from these programs after a week or so, if there were going to be any adverse effect you would have noticed them.

I did what you suggested and deleted the backup for these programs(spybot and AdAware). Then last night after the scan for viruses these wasn’t a report of files that Avast couldn’t scan. Thank goodness!

Thank you for the Welcome! I will drop by and read posts on the forum and just maybe I will learn more about computers.

Thanks again!

Happy to help, it doesn’t take long to build up lots of restore/recover data when running AdAware, S & D and similar programs so it pays to regularly delete old recovery/restore data.

Every since I update Avast , July 21st, I have scanned my computer for viruses everyday and It hasn’t found a viruses or spyware or malware. Before the update, Avast would find malware and spyware and suggest me to store it in the chest. I am afraid that Avast isn’t working correctly. So I paused it and went to Symanetec(norton) and scanned for problems. It found 8 adwares.

I am just concerned that it isn’t working correctly.

Depends…

If you have NAV and avast! installed at the same time in the same computer, even disabling one of them, avast! won’t work, you’re in deep trouble… :stuck_out_tongue:

Can you post the name of the files and their paths?
