unable to scan

hello all! im not that smart when it comes to this but ill ask anyways … i ran my scan with avast 4.7 i have the results and 116 files are “unable to be scanned” and most of them say because the " archive is password protected" how would i go about fixing this problem? how would i know what password to use to get into the file? should i repair it, put it to the chest, or just delete it? ??? thanks for the help!

These files are usually files from programs like adaware or other security programs. Avast doesn’t know the password and can’t scan them. It’s usually nothing to worry about. What are the names and paths for some of these files?

  1. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\UJQ3DZ6S\valert[1].ui\hs`valert.htm

  2. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temp\GLB5.tmp\Wise0003.bin

  3. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HIZ99Q0I\index[1].cfm\index[1]

  4. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\W92NWHMR\index[1].cfm\index[1]

  5. C:\System Volume Information_restore{8153ACA8-C727-4835-A3A2B949B296}RP425\A0358790.MSI\Cabs.W1.cab\AdAware_SE_default.ask\sprite1.bmp

im now noticing alot of the files are from the AdAware ( like number 5 )i didnt notice that before but the first 4 i have no idea about

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows ME or Windows XP. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it’s not available in Windows 2k. After boot you can enable System Restore again after step 3).

  2. Clean your temporary files. You can use CleanUp or the Windows Advanced Care features for that.

  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).

  4. It will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator and/or a-squared (take care about false positives).
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

  5. If you still detecting any strange behavior or even you’re sure you’re not clean, maybe it will be good to test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest AVG, Panda and/or F-Secure BlackLight.

  6. After you’re clean, use the immunization of SpywareBlaster or, which is better, the Windows Advanced Care features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

The adaware files are in all likelyhood, adaware signature files and files it(you) have quarintined. The program itself has “secured” these files from being scanned.

The first four are temp internet files, the fifth is an adaware file in the system restore.

Personally, I don’t think you have cause for alarm. A scan by another anti malware won’t hurt. Each one will find different things. Remember though, you will probably have more “password” protected files in your next scan. ;D
