Hi

Thanks but my computer is 64 bit and the instructions are for 32 bit. I have (had…) a samsung RC730 running on Windows7.

Wait for Essexboy, he’ll be online later today…

Do you have access to another computer and a spare USB stick / drive?

YES!

Sorry for the delay; here are the instructions for a scan if you still need to do so:

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

  2. Windows 7 64bit RC - location sent via PM

  3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Hi dbrisendine

I downloaded Rufus 2.2 Portable. Is that the one?

I’m unsure as to how to download Windows 7 64bit RC - location sent via PM as it seems that i have to open an account with Dropbox.

Sorry, it’s all new to me…

Do I have to have a brand new empty USB stick, ot can I use my everyday one?

Ok, I guess that as the stick will be formatted I answered my own question.

Now I tried to start the Rufus but the results are not like what is in your message. Worst of all when I press Start I get a message about "pressing the disk button or uncheck the option "Create a Startup disk (or something to that effect as the laptop I’m using is in Portuguese).

So, I am unable to run Rufus

The main diference now is that my Rufus does not diplay the very bottom green box in your instructions, and then of course it asks me to press the "Disk button2 and I have no idea what it’s referring to.

Forget earlier messages. I thin I got it and Rfus is working, if very slowly.

Sorry I was not here to answer your questions:

Dropbox - you do not have to have an account but it is free to get one.

Rufus - it is updated frequently and my pictures are out dated; sorry, I will update them. The green box on the bottom just shows that you have a iso image that you are using to create a bootable USB drive from.

“The green box on the bottom just shows that you have a iso image that you are using to create a bootable USB drive from.”

I used the file that I ownloaded. Is that ok. win7 64bit rc (1).iso

Now, I did not get anywere and assume that the USB drive is faulty and I will go and buy a new one. However, I notice that Rufus is supposed to open with POWER2GO. I don’t think that I have that. Is it important?

Hi

I’ve been able (as I did several times before) to get to the panel that gives you the choice of the Command prompt and have now opened Notepad.

I’m going out to get a new USB drive and see if I can get the rest of your instructions to work.

Succeeded (I think) in creating USB boot stick-

However the Samsung RC739 does not seem to have a clear way to change the boot to USB and I don’t know if I managed anything. Right now I started the system with the USB stick in place and nothing much is happening.

Rather, I think what is happening is what I had before: it takes hours to get to the System Recovery Options screen. An hour ago or so, I decided to insert the stck in at that stage and sure enough I found the FRST64 programme, but it did nothing. Your instructions say “Enter”. I tries that and “Open”. A lot of garbage appeared on the Notepad screen, but nothing else.

I guess first I need to sort out the bios boot sequence, but don’t know how.

The fact that I could get to the System Recovery Options screen without the USB stick seems to show that the boot is not a problem. That is why I thought that running a deep scan to find the virus that caused this, if that is the case

If you can get to the Recovery Options, then run a FRST scan from there (Recovery Options > Command Prompt and use the USB drive with FRST loaded on it).

As to changing the Boot order in the BIOS (for your machine), you tap F2 during the system power up and that loads the BIOS settings menu. BOOT section will let you change the Boot Device Priority.

You can find manuals for your system here but you may need to change the location to get the proper language.

Thanks

I’m driving 900 miles today. I will come back tomorrow after I arrive.

Just tried again before leaving. It’s arrived at the System Recovery Options screen.

I choose "Command prompt"and write Notepad after X:\windows\system32>
Notepad opens. I place the USB stick in the computer and use Notepad to search for the FRST programme.

I can see in Notepad "Repair disc Windows 7 64 bit (H:) which has the FRST

Now according to your earlier instruction I choose th FRST (making the line blue) and press Enter

but all I get is gibberish in the Notepad. The FRST does not open anywhere. I get the same result of instead of Enter I chose “Open” in the Notapad Open dialog

What am I doing wrong?
