Repair Avast:

Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
Click on ‘Repair’.
Follow instructions.
Reboot.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Windows 10 - firewall won’t start. Tried your suggestion to go to Control Panel, but there is no option to Repair - only Uninstall. Anyone having the same problem?

What comes up when you choose ‘uninstall’?
When you choose Avast in Control Panel and click Uninstall is there not a window appear that you can scroll and find “Repair” ??
