unable to start resident protection

I installed avast home edition.
I am using Windows 95 OSR2 (4.00.950B) and the resident protection didn’t start (disabled).
I found error messages in log files regarding ODBC and XML tasks.
Double clicking the icon and trying to start it answered that no tasks are using the component.
