Unable to type the registration key into avast

Hello guys,

I came to the forums to hopefully find an answer to my issue.

Due to a serious virus problem currently on my computer, certain aspects of Windows Pro SP2 have stopped working all together. I’m working on this. I needed to re-install avast! Antivirus because certain functions were no longer working. I also had no way of turning on the system start functions that it usually has, (where it sits in the system tray/clock part of the taskbar.)

My issue at the moment, is because of my windows problems, I can copy but I can’t paste anything. So when I received the registration key from avast!, I was unable to paste it into the key request box.

The real problem occurred when I also couldn’t type the registration key into the key request box. I get stuck on one number. The rest of it won’t go in there. What is that? I regret taking avast off now, because now I’m totally without protection. >.<“”“” gah!

Plz help! >,<“” Thank you so much.

Do you mean that if you right click the area for the registration key and select with the mouse the option ‘paste’, only the first number will be pasted?

Are you saying that the license key you received is one character longer than the program box allows - or that some character, from the middle of the license key, cannot be typed?

Have you already dealt with that? If your computer is still infected it may be preventing you from installing avast!.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in my getting back.

My computer’s in a sorry state.

Yah, if I try to copy and paste the key that was sent to my email, it doesn’t work because I can’t “paste” anymore with my computer. ???

If I try to type in the key that was sent by avast! registration into the box, I get stuck about 7 numbers/letters into the key ~ and then I can’t type one of the numbers. It’s real simple to do this, but for some reason it gets stuck and I can’t type this number in with the number pad nor the regular numbers above the letters on the keyboard.

I’m sorry if this sounds totally confusing. ><" I’m trying my best to explain.

Yah, I believe I have a virus or 2 on the computer, however, avast couldn’t actually put the viruses in the chest the last time I tried the scan.

Thanks for your help. I’m on my friend’s computer at the moment. So I’ll be able to check the forums a bit faster now.

edit: The last scan that I was able to perform with avast! was before I un-installed it. I tried re-installing because it wasn’t able to move the viruses to the chest. (I understand how this might have been a very bad move. I’ve tried everything I can to get the malware/viruses off my comptuer. It’s been a couple of weeks now, and I’m worried I have lost my 'puter to them.)

See if you’re able to do an on-line scan with Kasperski or Trend Micro

Remember to quarantine whenever possible.

Yes, the malware has had a long time to play on your computer but depending on what it is that might not be as bad as think.

It’s hard to say, but won’t be easier and faster just start everything again, reforming and installing Windows, etc.?

I always hate to think that but it very well may end up there.

If we can get an idea of how much and how bad the malware is maybe the answer will be more obvious.

A google search for cant use paste returns many hits, this is just one, http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread33288.html and http://www.vividreflection.com/blogEntry.php?id=16#update20060502, whilst this mentions firefox I think if it is the malware mentioned it could effect other applications. If you do find any of the files mentioned submit them to avast.
