unable to update avast! 6

hi all,

i’m using free avast! version 6.0.1367 on windows7 pro.
the program is registered & will expired 18 May 2012.

it works so well before until recently it won’t update the engine & virus definition & also the program.
it stuck at step 1(initializing), no progress at all at the progress bar.
my internet connection is ok.

i’ve change proxy setting from ‘auto-detect’ to ‘no proxy’ to no avail.
the ‘work offline’ in firefoz is already uncheck, but chrome is my default browser.
i also download the update avast! vps but when i click to install it, there’s a popup say 'error reading product data from ‘c\program files\avast software\avast\setup'. setup cannot continue.’
and after i click ok on the popup, another msg pop say ‘an error 0… has occured. last performed operation was: spawning’.
there’s another option i haven’t try, to uninstall/reinstall it but i hope that is the last option.

sori for such a long question…but please help.

so…why not uninstall, and install latest version…avast7 ?

Yes cozz avast 7 is the stablest version out there at current point.

download the version 7.

try to uninstall the version 6, the same error - 'error reading product data from ‘c\program files\avast software\avast\setup'. setup cannot continue.’
then i just try to install the v7, same error - 'error reading product data from ‘c\program files\avast software\avast\setup'. setup cannot continue.’ & ‘an error 0… has occured. last performed operation was: spawning’

what do i do now?
can i just delete the folder from program files or do i need to restore my pc?

you need the update patch then http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94514.0
I had the same problem and this was suggested to me by forum member " LOGOS"
