Unable to Update Avast & Web Browser Crashing

Here is the problem…

I had the latest update of Mozilla Firefox on my computer (Windows XP). All if the sudden, the browser started crashing very frequently. When it did not crash, I would sometimes get bounced to random websites. For instance, if I clicked a link for an anti-spyware program, I would get bounced to another site for anti-spyware programs (not the one I clicked). I could then press the backbutton to get the web address I was trying to get. I deleted Mozilla, thinking that was the problem, and used Internet Explorer 8. Same thing happened.

I scanned my computer using Avast anti-virus, and nothing was found. I then downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy and nothing was found. I then tried Windows Defender and nothing was found.

I then got a notice on the bottom right of my screen saying avast was out of date. I right-clicked on the avast icon and clicked on update. Nothing happened. I then went to Add-Remove Programs and tried updating from there. This message appeared… Downloading file: servers.def.vpu.stamp…but nothing happened. I then tried repairing avast. It repaired, but nothing changed.

I am not very savvy with computers, so keep please keep that in mind when giving advice. The person in this thread seemed to have similar problems http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=43784.15, but I got lost and could not follow the advice given. Plus my symptoms are slightly different. Thank You.

Could be hosts file hijacked - HOSTS file redirect a common malware tactic to block AV sites making it difficult to remove malware - 127.0.0.1 check your HOSTS file using notepad or a text editor of your choice, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or do a search for HOSTS to find it if not there.

Once open you are looking for entries with avast.com on the line, you may well see other AV sites, post the contents of the hosts file. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

This could also block security sites, and as such could also interfere with the avast update.

OK here are the ones with avast in the name…

I’m on another computer so I can’t copy and paste, but there are MANY. I listed only the ones with avast in the name. What is my next step? Do I delete these?

Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.

[]Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
[]Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
[]Click on “File Handling”.
[]Click on “Restore MS Hosts File”.
[]Click OK on the Confirmation box.
[]Click on “Make Read Only?”
[]Click the X to exit the program.
[]Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Please follow the prompts to ensure it is installed in the proper folder and
a shortcut is created.
[*]Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
[*]Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
[*]By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
[*]Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
[*]Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
[*]Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
[*]At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
[*]Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.

How are things going? We’ll run a scan and see if whatever changed your hosts file is still there.

You will need to disable Spybot’s Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
[*] Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
[*] If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
[*] If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
[*] Open Spybot S&D
[*] Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
[*] Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
[*] then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
[*] If your firewall raises a question, say OK
[*] In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident “Tea-Timer”(Protection of over-all system settings) active
[*] OK any prompts.
[*] Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
[*] Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

Download and save to your desktop Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
[*]Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
[*]If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
[*]Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
[*]The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
[]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
[]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
[*]Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

OK I could not do the first step because there was no such symbol in my tray, but I could do the second. Can I proceed to running HackThis!?

If you are unable to reset the hosts file you could manually edit it yourself. As oldman said you would have to disable the S&D resident protection (TeaTimer) before opening the HOSTS file using notepad.

See an example of my HOSTS file, these are the default settings.

[*]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]As part of it’s process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it’s strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

[*]Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer’s settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Avast updated!!! ;D IE 8 has not crashed as of yet, I will use it a little more and see how it goes…

I have had a quick look at the combofix log (not too familiar with it, hopefully oldman will have a look at it too) and the only thing I see that needs to be checked out further is:

c:\windows\system32\BD708F660F.sys

At first I though it might have something to do with BitDefender, so I did a google search on the file name and came up with zero hits, which in my mind is a little suspicious for a file in the system32 folder.

Check the suspect file/s at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here in the topic, the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page.

Send the sample to virus@avast.com zipped and password protected with the password in email body, a reference to this topic (give URL) and undetected malware in the subject.

Or you can also add the file to the User Files (File, Add) section of the avast chest (if it isn’t already there) where it can do no harm and send it from there. A copy of the file/s will remain in the original location, so you will need to take further action and can remove/rename that.

Send it from the User Files section of the chest (select the file, right click, email to Alwil Software). It will be uploaded (not actually emailed) to avast when the next avast auto (or manual) update is done.

What further action do i need to take to remove/delete that file? Do I just go into it and press delete? I obviously have no idea what I;m doing lol.
