Unable to Update to Latest Version

Searched for an answer to this but could’nt find anything.

I recieved the pop-up to update to the latest Avast program and find that I can’t.

When ever I try I get “the system cannot open the device or file specified” splash screen from Avast.

I’m running Windows 7 32bit.

Any advice?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If it fails, I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Which version are you on…??

Thanks for the reply’s.

To answer Asyn first, I using Ultimate.

Now back to Tech’s reply.

I tried CP/Add/Remove/Repair but that did’nt work but I noticed I had the option to upgrade that did install Avast, it then asked for a restart which I confirmed.

PC then booted to POST screen, then started to load Windows 7.
Here comes the kicker.

It Black screened on me.
After a few re-boots PC loads Windows 7 (can here start sound) but I have no video through either my PCI/embedded cards ??!!??!!

Managed get video in Safe Mode with networking so will try complete uninstall/re-install.

  1. You’re welcome…!
  2. No, I meant which avast version…?

martnic, any other previous antivirus in this machine? Any other security program that could interfere?

Avast 5 free version (realised after posted) and no other AV/Anti-malware apart from Windows Firewall.

Ok, and which build…??
The latest is 5.0.594…!
asyn

It was Build 5.0.545.

Need any further info before re-install?

Download the latest 5.0.590.

No, Tech, latest is 5.0.594…!!
asyn

Sorry.

LOL

Trying to upgrade is what got me here!!!

I have upgraded to 5.0.594 which gave me no video (above post).

I’ve found the old log files if there need, if not I’ll just re-install.

Well, if you had told us, we could have saved some time for all of us…
Which other security related software is installed on your system…??
asyn

I love quoting myself.

Sorry, my mistake…!!
Did you try the un/reinstall by Tech…??
Please try this. (with the uninstall utility…!)

I am basically having the same problem. I am using Vista 32-bit. Received a pop-up this morning asking me to update to the new version of the software. I did so and did the required reboot. On reboot after logging in to windows I get a black screen. In safe mode I was able to restore back to a previous restore point. And now I can boot and everything looks fine. EXCEPT avast! now refuses to run. I get the red x on the tray icon. When I click on the icon I can see that the software is not running. The message says there is a conflict issue or the software is not running. When I try to start it there is no response.

I am using avast! pro and it has been running perfectly fine for months.

Which other security related programs are installed…??
asyn

none.

I used to use MS OneCare but uninstalled it after they stop supporting it. that’s when I switched to avast

The 5.x version…?
