Hihi all…I need help on virus definition updates on my Avast Home Edition 4.5…
- I am on a broadband connection now and can’t seem to update through the automatic updates that I used to when I was on a 56k internet connection. I always get the following error message:
Connection terminated,retrying…
but nothing results from it eventually… sobz.
- So i try downloading the virus updates manually via AVAST website…However…The first time i download any updates…I always get a small error window…Below is an example from my recent encounter:
Can’t install VPS update, please report following errorcodes,
Ver: 4.5.549
SI: 0x00000005
ST: 0x00000005
LE: 0x00000000
Thanks in advance to Avast Technical Help or whoever replies…

Seems like an Access Denied error.
Are you logged on as an administrator?

Oh yes…I am the only user of my pc and I’m always logged on as the adminstrator…But as I’ve mentioned before…this problem arose after I switched to broadband connection…Thanks for helping anyway…
Femaki, did you set correctly the Connections (Advanced) tab of settings to work with your new permanent connection?
Do you have a firewall? Which one?
Is avast.setup allowed to connect and update?
Do you use a proxy filter?

Oh…I do use the Win XP internet explorer internet firewall… However this problem did not exist when I put up the firewall during my dial-up connection days…
Oh n yes…I’ve stated that I am permanently connected to the Internet in the AVAST settings…
Proxy filter? How do I check that out? ???
Thanks
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

I don’t know if it will help, but post a HijackThis log here. With a bit of luck it may give us a clue. At least it won’t harm and we can make sure that this is not caused by any malware on your system.
