I looked at the forum but did not found same problem.
2 weeks ago installed XP
Earlier today I installed SP2
Restart
Then installed Avast 4.1 Home edition
Restart
Entered license key - everything seemed fine until i clicked “Updateing - iAVS update”
Nothing happenned, although for few seconds the cursor was “hour-glassed”
Started GUI interface - went to settings.
“update - basic” - clicking “update now” gives nothing
After I click on “details” button, the GUI freezes (OS is ok) - GUI can only be killed, then a msg that an error was encountered appears ( i sent report to MS once)
I downloaded manually the VPS file. Started it - error msg:
home.
I’m unable to set proxy - as I wrote - clicking “details” (where if I remember the proxy settings are), the GUI freezes.
I tried editing avast4.ini , but no change (maybe a restart is needed?)
What bothers me is the fact that vpsupd.exe fails
vpsupd.exe has still some bugs. They’ll be fixed soon.
Re: the problem with proxy dialogue - it is happening when another instance of setup program is already running. Check if there’s avast.setup process running, kill it and try to set the proxy settings.
Sorry. Just installed Home edition and I’m encountering the same update problem. I go to my Task Manager (Win2K) and it shows avast.setup running but when I tell it to end process it says it can’t end. When I try to manually update “vpsupd.exe” (downloaded from website), I get the same error as reported in the first post in this thread.
How do I go about stopping the avast.setup process in order to be able to update the file? I’m logged on as an Administrator so permissions shouldn’t be the problem. Do I need to edit the avast.ini file (and if so, how)?
Sorry for such a newbie question but I’m a recent NAV then McAfee then AVG convert.
try www.anvir.com , I killed avast.setup with it.
After entering by hand proxy settings update seems to be working… using “automatic detect IE settings” has some problems obviously…

Welcome to the Forums.
I don’t know anything about the program that Restless just mentioned however, it’s not anything i’ve ever used. If you want to temporarly shut down Avast! then please use the following: RejZor Avast External Control (AEC) This program can be classified as avast! Rescue Kit.
You’ll find many features to help you remove that nasty parasite or to check avast! status and versions.
Readme with full description of all features and Changelog included in Program
Well, it’s not necessary to quit avast.setup process (unfinished update process) but, sure, you have to configure your firewall and proxy settings (if any) to update.
Earlier versions of avast have problems with automatic detect IE settings but not in the last one (at least for me).
Can’t you update even manually?
Did you set the way you connect the Internet into avast settings?
