Well the 0002 is a windows error ="The system cannot find the file specified. "
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
I’ve also installed System Safety Monitor : can you tell me whether it can comes from SSM ( rule not created or … ).
I’ve tried a manual update ( VRDB and program ) : no problem ; SSM ask me if C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.ovr is authorized. I answer “Yes”.
I only used SSM for a short time (some time ago) before I uninstalled it I couldn’t make any sense of it and there was no help file to assist or explain what it was doing. So I can’t understand why SSM asked permission for setup.ovr (you didn’t say), whilst that file is used to create the avast.setup file it doesn’t connect to the internet.
Why would SSM know the difference between a manual update (no problem to quote the earlier post) and an automatic update and discriminate between them?
I just installed SSM (currently available version 2.2.0.602) on my system to see what it is about.
It performed exactly as described by gtaillandier (in earlier posts in this thread) in respect of a manual update. It did not interfere in any way with the avast startup process and update checks on my system.
I doubt very much that SSM is the cause of any blocking of avast automatic update.
I’ve tried a manual update.
Result : already up to date.
But I’ve got error messages when starting my computer :
22/12/2006 20:30:43 SYSTEM 1508 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x00000002, dwRes is 00000002.
22/12/2006 20:30:44 SYSTEM 1508 An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.
I’m not sure, but it seems me that the message told me that the file was not found.
I’ll capture the screen the next time I’ll get the error message.
