Unable to update

Hi Folks, I hope you can help. I’ve downloaded Avast home edition 4.8 but am unable to update it.

Get message

Other HTTP error (404). whilst trying 127.0.0.1:80//iavs4x/servers.def

I’ve tried uninstalling it and starting again but still get the same message.

Thanks in anticipation even of reading this message ;D

Welcome Rae

What is your operation system and Service pack level and do you have a firewall running?

How do you connect to the Internet?

Sorry I always think others have ESP and a crystal ball, (I do apparently :))
I’m using Windows XP service pack 3
Windows firewall (which has been excellent up to now, but this is now another promblem for another post!!!)
IE7

AOL installed (mail scanner will not work and I know this)

Avast is not working at all!!!

Ooooooooooooooops forgot to say thanx for welcome!!! you see how this prob has affected me  ;D

I don’t know if this will help, it’s all gobbledy gook to me ???

…and more…

final bit…

Which firewall do you use?
Any other security program?
Does this occur all the time or if you boot the problem is solved?

Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP, Vista?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

the avast log posted shows that this is a Windows XP SP3 system.

The end of the log has a very puzzling line that shows some kind of http proxy (127.0.0.1:80) is in use on this system. That may well be causing the problem. Are you using a proxy to connect to the Internet (or some kind of Internet accelerator)?

Please try going to avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) > Click on “Proxy” > Try the various connect options and click on “Test connection”.

See if Direct Connection will work for you.

Thank you Tech and Alanrf for your replies.
The only answer that I hadn’t included in my 2nd post is that I’m not using any other antivirus program. I did unistall Avast and tried AVG 8 but had the same problem. Unfortunately the repair didn’t work either.

I’m not using a proxy to connect, or any kind of accelerator. Do you think that the end line(s) of the log indicate a virus? I did have a huge problem with several Trojans back last week but have reformatted since then, perhaps it’s a piece of code left?

I gave up last night and reformatted will finish it tonight and download Avast again. Interesting point about Windows SP3, I may try Avast before this update is downloaded to see if the pack is the problem.

Thanks again

We in our countless hordes are using avast with Windows XP SP3 … there is no … none … zilch problems with avast and Windows XP SP3.

Oooooooooooops sorry misunderstood your post. I’ve just re-read it to see you were just pointing out that it was an SP3 system.

I’ve used Avast previously and love it never having any problems until now. Hopefully it will all be sorted by tonight and I can get back to my PC instead of monopolising my sons laptop

I hope the reformat and start over will take care of your problem. If not we will still be here to try to help.

Thanx I’ll let you know! Fingers and everything else crossed ;D

Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Avast is working again after my reformat, still some downloading to do. Thanks for all the advice and patience.
If I could just push my luck a little further… does anyone know how to get avast to scan email sent via AOL? :-*
