Unable to update.

I am using avast 4.8 Home addition. A few days ago I got a warning message saying Avast could not update the virus definitions.

I’ve checked the fire wall and It is letting avast through. I have uninstantiated avast using the avast utility and reinstalled… still getting the same problem.

If I do a manual update I get the following message.

Information about current update:
Total time:0 s

Any ideas

Damon

Which is your Windows and your firewall?
Is avast.setup allowed to connect?

I am on XP 64 and am using windows Firewall.

avast.setup
ashServ.exe
ashWebSv.exe
aswUpdSV.exe
avast! Antivirous

are all exempt form the firewall.

Can you manually update?
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

I get a 1000 max character limit. do you have an email address I can send it to?

I have uploaded the log to this location

https://www.yousendit.com/download/U0d3T0NRcG9tNEx2Wmc9PQ

Post it by parts, starting form the end of it…
I don’t disclose my email in forums, sorry.

Ok. Isn’t avast working now? The log seems ok…

Windows security centre is saying the virus definitions are out of date.

avast just crashed with this error

szAppName : avast.setup szAppVer : 4.8.0.0 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 100041f0

Sometimes, Windows Security Center stop recognizing your antivirus or firewall… So, check your system time and date and also http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23457.msg193534#msg193534

I tried removing wbem Repository.

It didn’t make any difference.

I tried updating the anti virus on another computer and it comes up with information about the current version.

On my computer it dose nto give me any information. I think the problem ios the anti virous is blocked. I have unblocked it in the fire wall settings. Is there any way to test it

Which is your firewall?

He is using Windows firewall, Tech.

The log posted is ok but only as far as it goes.

It shows the successful installation of the latest version of avast but with a completely out of date virus database (contained in the installation). If this is really the end of the setup log then the poster’s virus database is seriously out of date.

The log should include (at least by now) all of the updates required to bring the virus database up to date.

So is the “out of date” problem still happening? If so can we see the current end of the log please?

I have booted up my computer and it is coming up with avast errors.

I’ve uploaded the dump file? And the setup.log to the following

https://www.yousendit.com/download/U0d3eUNDd0lvQnMwTVE9PQ

Log seems ok.
Except that I suggest you register your avast copy. Maybe the install/uninstall is avoiding you to use the trial version.
Go to the SSL page version and register from there: https://secure.avast.com/scripts/register.php?lang=ENG. The Registration key is valid for 14 months.
See the tutorial: http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm

Well. the new log (again) shows an exact, line by line, replication of the last installation leaving the system with a very out of date VPS.

It is the setup log after rebooting from the installation that would probably help us to help Damon.

Hi

It is already registered

You can force an installation by this command on the folder you’ve donwload and save the install file: setupeng.exe /forceinstall
Where setupeng.exe is the name of the executable.

To debug, add the following lines to setup.ini (in avast4\setup):
[BufferLog]
Enable=1

Then start update again, and SetupDbg.log should be generated. Post the contents here, it should give us a clue at which step it is the problem.
