unblocking Microsoft Word Starter

After updating Avast Internet Security today, I forgot that I had a Word Starter doc open. When my computer would not restart, I tried to save my doc but got a pop up from Avast saying something like “an app is trying to close (or maybe save) a file. Do you want to allow?” I accidentally clicked no and it then told me that app was blocked. App? I think of apps as being on phones. This is a laptop. Now I cannot save anything in Word. I don’t know where to go to unblock it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have read about unblocking websites, but this is not exactly the same.
