Uncommanded shut-downs

For some time now my Windows 7 laptop has suddenly shut down within several minutes of waking. Happens a couple times a week.

While online this morning, I noticed the Avast icon in the bottom task bar started to blink, and shortly thereafter the computer shut down. Someone know what might be going on here?

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Yikes – I’ll try

Free download, “created 10/22/2010”. Dunno where to look for version.
Win 7 32 I think
No other AV currently or previously but I do have SuperAntiSpyware

sorry if this double-posts. The first didn’t seem to go thru

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I’ll give it a shot, thanx.

You’re welcome.
Please report back.

Okay I downloaded and saved the Avast install

Need more info for the uninstall. I’ve heard of opening in safe mode, but never done it. Any reason I shouldn’t just try a normal uninstall from the control panel?

If I need to do the safe mode thing, I’ll need instructions.

Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)

I think you missed my point. Those instructions say to start the computer in safe mode and I don’t know what that means. I’m not a computer guy.

You may find these instructions a little easier to understand:

I think I got it done. Seem to have V7 now. Whether it helped…time will tell. If I don’t come back within a week or two – success.

Thanks guys.

You’re welcome.
