Hi, I need some help uninstalling avast. I used revo uninstaller to perform the function but the programme appears to be still running with the spinning icon in the task bar however there is no icon in program list. The reason for uninstalling is that OH purchased Norton Premier Edition for 3 computers for his work. I performed these actions (uninstall avast and install Norton) about 3 days ago and then this morning when I turned on the computer avast! tells me that:
"a suspicious hidden object (rootkit) has been detected on your system. This may be a sign of a malware infection. It is recommended to remove the object immediately.
file name – C:\ProgramData\Norton{0C55C09…\NAVENG.SYS Rootkit name – Rootkit:
I have just discovered that Avast! recommend an alternative process for function using aswClear5.exe – can I still use this even after using revo uninstaller? And will the instructions be exactly the same?
The other point worth noting is that my registration with avast will expire in 3 days. This will no doubt solve the conflict issues with Norton but really, unwanted stuff should be properly removed… oughtn’t it :-?
BTW - I chose ignore and clicked OK on the avast popup.
Hello nikcla: To uninstall Avast you should go to Control Panel, Then Add and Remove Programs and Choose Avast, then Change/Remove and Click Uninstall.
If there is no entry for Avast in the Add and Remove PRograms then follow these instructions:
Please download aswClear5.exe (Clean up Utility) http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your hard drive where you can access it easily.
BOOT into ‘SAFE MODE’ and find the (aswClear5.exe) download you saved to your hard drive and run the Clean up tool. Make sure you first choose the version from the list supplied in the tool that you want to cleanup and then run the tool by choosing Uninstall; your computer will automatically reboot.
If you have had more then one version of Avast installed on your computer, you need to choose the version in the Clean up tool that you have had installed on your system one at a time. If you have had both v.4 and v.5.0 installed, then you need to follow the ‘safe mode’ process twice; once for each version separately.
Hope that does it for you. If there are any other questions feel free.
Revo is honestly a program I wouldn’t use on a security application as it is never going to be as good as the companies uninstaller. Trying to use something like revo is likely to bump into the avast self-defence module.
Revo may have messed up some windows add remove programs functions, e.g. removed avast from the add remove programs list ?
You should confirm if there is an avast entry in the control panel, add remove programs list, if so use that. If not run aswclear5.exe from safe mode, even if the entry is in add remove programs I would use that first and then boot into safe mode and run the avast uninstall utility.
The fact that avast will expire in 3 days won’t remove it, it just won’t update and elements would be running should you update the license, so it has to be removed.
Thank you for your replies. Just to confirm there is no icon in the add/install programs list so I will follow the safe mode instructions. I didn’t know the security programs should be uninstalled without revo uninstaller.
Hopefully I can perform the function with no problems.
It isn’t that revo can’t uninstall them, just that it is not likely to know all the file locations outside the program folder and all the registry keys, etc. not to mention many security applications have self-defence modules to prevent malware doing what revo is attempting.
If revo messes up then you can be left with problems such as this, so for me I wouldn’t use it for removing security applications.
Doesn’t Revo run the program’s own uninstaller first and then check for remnants afterwards? I just installed it and tested it by uninstalling SuperAntiSpyware. It said it was using the SAS uninstaller first. I ran Revo in advanced mode but found out later that it did not remove everything. Auslogics registry Cleaner found two additional registry entries related to the SAS core service that the new v5 of SAS puts on your system.
Hah You had norton on your computers. If you are going to use avast in the future. You need to use norton removal tool to get rid of all norton symantec components!.
