Press F8 before the Windows XP splash screen (i.e. graphics logo).
The tool does not require to boot in safe mode…
It won’t work in normal mode if elements of avast are still running, e.g. the self-defence module. I guess the reason Breakstar mentioned the boot into safe mode because he got the message when trying to use the uninstall utility in normal mode.
Yes you can disable the self-defence module, but I guess Alwil know why they recommend safe mode.

I’m reading between the lines, why would he ask how do I boot into safe mode as no one told him to run the utility from safe mode. Breakstar was just given the link for the utility.
So I assume that he downloaded and ran it from normal mode (reading between the lines) and experienced the self-defence module is running error which suggest running it from safe mode. Because Breakstar didn’t know how to do this he asked.
