I run Avast free on Vista and recently I have found that I have to uninstall the previous version, reboot, install the new one and reregister each time there is an update. I have read the post about Avast reading the old version and doing the uninstall and install itself, but this ain’t happening now. The last three updates have required a full uninstall and reload. Not a big problem, but one heck of a time waster! Any suggestions?
Strange… Are you using any rollback system or system restore?
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results.
Thanks for the reply - not sure I understand all of it! I’m in and out for a day ot two, but will try to do what you suggest and come back to you
@ hectorjt,
Basically something is most likely not working correctly with Avast on your machine and it should not be acting the way it is. So Tech gave you instructions to follow step-by-step to resolve your problem. Post back with any problems.
Tech. OK just had time to do everything. Starting from the top of your instructions:
No rollback system or system restore being used.
Followed instructions 1 - 6 exactly. It uninstalled from Control Panel and I didn’t need to reboot in safe mode (this was the bit I had to look up!)
Ran Avast! Uninstall Utility which showed a number of items that would be uninstalled on re-boot. I did so.
Installed Avast! Free latest version and registered.
All seems fine, but I presumably won’t know until the next update comes along?
Many thanks for your help anyway.
hectorjt, you’re welcome. Glad we could help. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
