I’ve been advised to uninstall/reinstall windows due to a shutdown problem I’m having. Also to backup my important data befor doing so. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall/reinstall windows and backup my data. Not very computer savy. Thanks
Try Overinstallation first. It can solve the problem and you won’t lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose ‘Repair’ installation of Windows and install ‘over’ the old installation.

Insert the windows disk in you drive and reboot the PC .
Then press f10 and f12 keys from your keyboard simultenously and quickly till u star hearing beep sound but do not stop.
Then you will be displayed a list. Scroll down or up using arrow keys and choose your CD drive name eg:the drive name of my cd drive is:HL-Dt-DST-Hitachi-cd.
If u do not know ur drive name.Simply scroll to the option having the word CD.
Then it will come"press any key to boot from CD" ,Press any immediately.
Then a blue screen will appear.
After all the files are loaded by the setup automatically, follow the instructions given at the bottom of the screen.
But remember when it comes to choose repair or dont repair option choose the latter.
Any further help, e-mail me

If u dont want to lose ur data, when it comes to choose in whether to format the drive or not choose “leave this partition intact”
Important Reinstalling the Windows operating system or performing an in-place upgrade of your operating system is an extreme troubleshooting step that you should only take if you fully understand the ramifications and risks involved.
As a not to savy computer user the above kind of scares me. So here is another thought. I see where Windows 7 will be out the end of October. Would I be better off waiting for it then trying the reinstalling
of XP at this time???
Windows 7 needs a much more powerful system than an XP system will run on.

This is the same as trying to run XP on a system that was running Win98SE.
This is what Upgrade Advisor indicates with my XP Pro system
RAM 768.00 MB Your PC needs at least 1 GB of system memory for optimal performance. Contact your PC manufacturer or retailer to see if a RAM upgrade is available.Windows Aero Not capable Your current graphics adapter won’t support the Windows Aero user interface. Contact your PC manufacturer or retailer to see if an upgrade is possible.
I would not even consider running Windows 7 with 1 GB RAM and to upgrade to 2.75 GB it would cost $US $85.98.
For Tech. In regards to your advise on try overinstallation first. Where do I go to “Repair” installation of Windows.
Using the Windows CD/DVD, booting with it should show that option.
Prerequisites Windows Installation CD Before you start, have your Windows installation CD and the product key available. Without these, you cannot reinstall Windows. If Windows was preinstalled on your computer, contact the computer manufacturer for help in obtaining the Windows installation files and product key.
