uninstalled Avast Pro and now my root directory files are missing

Yesterday I uninstalled Avast Pro and re-installed the free version. I did that because the Pro version was scanning frequently in the background and wouldn’t shut off (when I happened to need full CPU power). I uninstalled Pro, re-installed free and thought everything was good until I just went to look for a file in my root directory and now find all files in my root directory are gone with the exception of a file called “78875.sym” dated 12/31/2011

My system clock is fine so it doesn’t appear related to that and I have a HUGE amount of data in my recycle bin but nothing that appears to be my root directory files.

Any ideas anyone?

TIA

Well, I have been awake a few hours, and taken the happy pills, but this makes zero sense to me.

If all your “Root” files are gone , you could not boot Windows, or see the Recycle Bin.

Also, you removed Avast Pro because of scanning … installed Avast Free, why? They both work in exactly the same way, you have saved nothing.

Do you have Restore points, can you recover the system that way?
