Uninstalled Threatfire, Re-downloaded and installed Avast....

Now my Internet Mail Shield is working, but I can’t send or receive mail in Windows Mail or Windows Live, nor can I log on to my web based (centurytel.net) email. I was able to log on to the web account at work today, so I’m thinking it must be Avast. When I turned on my computer this a.m., the mail worked. I did the aforementioned ‘maintenance’, now nothing.

I checked around in the Avast program, and in the virus vault there are 3 files; kernel32.dll location Windows\system32 winsock.dll (same location) and wsock32.dll (same location). I checked all 3 and they came up as ‘no virus’. Should I restore those 3 files? Oh, and I checked my account set ups in Windows Mail, and all seemed well.

BTW, a great big THANK YOU to all of you who help out here. It is greatly appreciated…

I really do wish Alwil would get rid of this All Chest Files collation of the three sections:

  • The only area you should be interested in is the Infected Files section, this is where the files detected by avast and selected by you to move to the chest are placed.- The User Files section is where the user can add files they suspect of being malware but not detected by avast.- The System Files section is where avast keeps back-up copies of important system files in case the original becomes infected (leave them alone).- The All Chest Files is a collation of the three sections.

What is your OS ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe and ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for them and reconnect to the internet, browse and attempt to collect your email, etc. this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Which is your email provider? GMail? Does it use SSL connection?

Here’s my original post…

I’m running widows Vista. This a.m., threatfire popped up a virus warning (and quarantined) this file: C:\Program Files\AlwilSoftware\Avast4\ashmaiSv.exe labeled a trojan Win32downloader.

I opened Avast and it shows Infected count: 0 for all 7 shields.

However, the normally active Internet Mail Shield is not running. There is a message at the top (underneath the title ‘Internet Mail’) that says “The Provider is waiting for a subsystem to start”.

I did run onecarelive last night which found nothing.

Any ideas? I haven’t tried anything yet, should I start by uninstalling/reinstalling?

Firewall = Windows Firewall (other suggestions welcome)
