Uninstalling Norton Antivirus to run Avast

I have a portion of Norton 2005 trial version installed on my computer, and I can’t delete it when I go to ADD/REMOVE programs. Can you tell me how I can get rid of Norton off my computer for good. I have Windows XP/home edit. Thanks for any help.
