unistall/reinstall problem

[font=Verdana]Hello
I have tried to uninstall Avast as part of cleaning a problem I have with web access. I used to have to antivirus running so I had to uninstall one.
I have tried to uninstall avast through the control panel but still some files are staying and I get the red window everytime I boot.
So I went and downloaded the program ajavascript:void(0);
Teletypegain and tried to reinstall it but it doesn’t want to work either because it still detects the old version of the program.
I have an error message when I try to open avast saying it can’t load the news.dll then a whole page of unloaded skins and that’s it.
When I try to re-install avast it says: a setiface error 2 as occured the last operation was: spawning…
sorry I don’t understand this.
Please help!
Thank you very much in advance :-\

Hello there,

I keep getting the same error message when trying to re-install Avast 4.8 (French version). Actually I’m trying to remove it but can’t do so from the control panel so i tried downloading the unistall utility but when i try to run it i get another error message : “The avast! self protection module is enabled, for this reason, the operation cannot be completed. To complete the operation either run this program from windows safe mode (which i tried but the programme doesn’t work: when i tried to open it, nothing happens :-[), or disable the avast self protecting (via settings → troubleshooting)” : which I can’t do since whenever i try to open avast, nothing happens…
When i started my computer this morning, i got a message saying an update failed too but when i clicked to get more information, once again, nothing happened and i can’t seem to open avast in any way; don’t know if that’s another problem or if all these things are related ???

Please help!

Thanks a lot

Hello,
I have used the uninstall utility on Safe mode and it worked.
Good luck! ::slight_smile:

theblond, do you use any other antivirus in this computer? Did you use in the past?
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Thanx a lot for your answers: it was my first post ever and i wasn’t expecting much of it so that was a nice surprise :o

Another good surprise was that i ran the uninstall utility from Safe mode again and that time it worked ???

To answer your question Tech, i don’t have any other antivirus running on this computer (only windowsXP firewall) but there was a free demo of norton when i bought my computer, might be some files left somewhere (though i removed it from the control panel long ago…?)

I couldn’t uninstall avast from the control panel, even in Safe mode so what you suggested is what i tried to do before posting a message here (unless i haven’t understood properly, which is highly probable since my knowledge of computers - and of ‘computer English’ - is pretty poor).

Everything seems fine now, but I haven’t reinstalled avast, I’m not sure I will because now i sometimes get a “server not found” message when i try to go on the internet. Everything worked perfectly well before i installed avast but now i can’t connect to the internet 4 times out of 5! It’s driving me mad: I don’t understand why, without changing any settings to my connexions, it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t! >:( So If you have any idea i would really appreciate your help!

Thanx again.

Most probably…

  1. If it still there, remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
  3. Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

For that occasions, use the avast uninstall tool directly.
