Unknown Folder on my harddisk

I have unknown folder on my harddisk. I dont know who created it, may be it is created by someone from the internet. I want to know if this folder and files containing in it are used against me by hackers.

unknown folder named as

I presume you have a 64bit machine?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=what+is+the+amd64+folder&btnG=Search&meta=

seems a required folder for the 64bit architechture…

I have Windows xp sp3 32bit operating system on 32bit Intel processor. I have no 64bit OS

That could be a part of ATI installation. I have that amd64 too but not in inside a folder.

I am sorry if I cannot show you any screenshot of it, it seems like viewing hidden folders in my PC wont work? Malware, probably, I’ll have a scan for now.

Maybe these will help:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/368337-amd64-i386-folders-winxp-media-center-32-bit-edition.html

Seems driver related, but it is a safe file:
From the second link:

A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

It’s fine, I’d leave it…

Those folders are from Windows updates. They should be automatically deleted after installation / reboot, but sometimes they aren’t.

I do PC repair, and have noticed them staying in the root of C: more often in recent months. Maybe Microsoft is getting lazy with XP updates.

it seems like viewing hidden folders in my PC wont work
Maybe you need to change your folder settings to allow the viewing of hidden folders ???

I have already set my computer to - Show Hidden Files and Folders.
This folder view setting is from last few months.

My reply was directed at .: L’ arc :. who posted the quote my remark was direct to.

I tried it. It wont work, it gets turned off everytime I enable it, same thing for other folder options. I did a full scan with avast & MBAM and returned no good results. I’ll be messing with the registry for now. Bon voyage!

Look for an application called fixpolicies – it is a simple script file, accompanied by a console version of regedit. I have had good luck with it setting things back the way they should after a malware cleanup.

you can get a copy here hxxp://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCastner/FixPolicies.exe

Just fixed it by:

  1. Click “Start” → “Run…” (or press Windows key + R)
  2. Type “regedit” and click “Ok”.
  3. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
    Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
  4. Look at the “CheckedValue” key… This should be a DWORD key. If it isn’t, delete the key.
  5. Create a new key called “CheckedValue” as a DWORD (hexadecimal) with a value of 1.

Hmm. A possible aftermath of a virus attack.

Glad u survived the hands of death mate^^

Well, it was a very desperate move to mess with the registry. Good thing the internet is always around for help.

Have you upgraded your OS sometime. In which case similar to what Pedro Hin says.

Sorry on reconsideration, perhaps not upgrades. Rather, manual update of service packs may leave you with this Folder. When you save down the service pack as a file rather than running it in real time. Then run the sp at a later date on same computer or another computer. You are often left with this folder.

I dont think any harm comes of it. But I haven’t looked any deeper into it either. Maybe someone else has something to offer. Occurs when I bring an outdated installation of XP up to current service pack level.
