unknown problem, any idea's before I rip my HD out.

This happen before, and I don’t know why I did it again, but I loaded google desktop a year or so ago, pc started to stop responding, (IE6, download managers, avast updater, etc.) So I deleted my partion, and reformatted loaded reloaded XP Pro, SP2. Life was good. A few weeks Ago I gave Google desktop another try. Samething all over again. IE stop responding, and others. Avast has trouble with the update server, I get a error and then it reconnect and downloads the updates, but don’t give the completed update dialog at the end telling me the old and new vdbs until I reboot the pc. I think that G desktop is a virus.

I uninstalled G desktop but pc is still acking funny, just like last time. Is their a way avast could help me restore system? System Restore don’t help. Can’t get back far enough. Thought I would ask before I delete my partition, or rip out the hard drive.

You could dislike the application, but it’s not a virus.

Something more than Google is messing your computer.

avast is not a backup. You could scan and clean your system, but not restore (a backup).

Try general cleaning procedure… with patience…

  1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
  4. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.

I cleaned the temps and ran virus scan already, I did not shut down sys restore, thought. Are the spyware detection you mention you choice apps, I have xoftspyware. Antirootkit hmm, have to check this out.

My scans turned up nothing, Avast and xoftspy.

I know g desktops not a virus, but both times I loaded it the same thing happen. I thought it changed my sys files. Going to try your suggestion now.

Indeed I’ve read a lot of bad thinks about xoftspy… I think there are a lot of better options for an antispyware
