I have successfully used Avast 4 for months. Love it. I decided to try Avast 5 which uninstalled Avast 4.
I decided to go back to version 4. So I uninstalled 5 and reinstalled 4.8. I got a new registration key since I couldn’t remember my old one.
When I enter my new key, it’s accepted. But then a screen appears:
Avast!:
Unknown registration key; followed by 19 numbers and letters. I’m assuming that this must be the old key.
This key is different from my new one I entered.
I get in circle saying I have to have enter a valid key. I enter the new one again. It’s accepted. The unknown registration key window is in the background. When I click OK, a new message asks if I have a registration key, and this keeps going in circles. When I finally click on No, Avast closes.
How do I get rid of the “unknown registration key”?
I just encountered the same problem upon reinstalling 4.8 (after finding that version 5 does not work, due to configuration problem?).
The blue globe rotates when I click various links, so I assume 4.8 is working, but I’m troubled by this license key issue.
Same thing here, but then I noticed that Avast! had “upgraded” itself to the Pro version, without my permission, which explains why the Free version Keys won’t work!
Anyone know if uninstalling the Pro version in order to install the free version will loose my files from the “Virus Vault”? I need one back, and now I can’t access it?!?! >:( Thanks for any help!
If you did a clean install of avast 5 then the registration is on-line based via the avast 5 GUI.
Using the GUI, Maintenance, Registration, that should show when the license is due to run out (possibly 30 days) or there will be something there to register, form to complete, etc. check out the .pdf file link below.
Weren’t you downloading the pro version, if so then there shouldn’t be an issue replacing like for like. People on the beta trial who had 4.8 pro and were going to be using 5.0 free, I don’t think they had a problem, but they may well have done a clean install of 5.0.
I’m not sure why it wouldn’t uninstall 4.8, so you may have to do a clean install.
I have register pro 4. It downloaded pro 5 and my registration key will not work. I uninstalled and tried again but the same happened. I tried to upgrade my key to get a license file and nothing happened. I have not had an email. Does anyone know how long this should take or what should happen? I am getting incresing frustrated as it now says my subscription has run out -after 24hrs!

On the install over 4.8 it should have converted your existing license.
On a clean install of 5.0 the old license won’t work as it is now a license file, so you need to get that converted.
avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php now, fill in your email and and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).
Is this the process you went through ?
If so it is possible that the email is being blocked by some anti-spam filter (some ISPs do this regularly without the users knowledge). Try using a different email address, free webmail like gmail or yahoo, etc.
