Hi! I am a proud new user of Avast! home edition Classic… But I have a big problem. My computer is infected with a virus, that is somehow detectable by antivirus software, but can’t be cleaned or deleted… I tried everything. Since Avast! couldn’t help me (I update regularly), I tried some other antivirus programs. AntiVir named this virus as ‘‘TR/Dldr.harniq.bb’’, but it was also unable to get rid of it… I tried a dos and demo version of F-prot, which both also found in this same folder (C:_RESTORE\TEMP) two infected files, but were also unable to delete or clean them. They on the other hand named the virus/worm or whatever it might be as ‘‘W32/downloader.gen’’. I also used Avg antivirus, spybot, Ad-aware, SpyCatcher & XoftSpy, but they didn’t even detect it… One of the detected infected files by Avast! and f-prot is named ‘‘A0025797.CPY’’ Located in C:_RESTORE\TEMP folder, which is ‘‘invisible’’ or somehow unaccessible to explorer, therefore I also can’t delete the infected file manually… I also know for a fact that in this folder (C:_Restore) are many hidden files and subfolders with many, many such *.cpy files, that I also think are multiplying, because the number of files shown in folders properties is slowly growing (last time I checked there were 3.638 + many more in 5 subfolders = 2,42Gb)… Because of that, Avast! and some other antivirus programs also take very long time to scan the folder… This virus is clearly eating slowly away my diskspace! If anyone, you are the ones who can help me. I’m desperate and out of ideas… Help!
The easiest way to remove files from c:\restore folder is to disable the restore option on the PC
You need to disable system restore, because windows locks the folder.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS WILL BE LOST
To do this click start, then goto control panel, click on performance and maintenance then click on system, and the system restore tab is located at the top. (If you are using ‘classic view’, click start, control panel and then click on system)
Once there put a tick in turn off system restore on all drives, then apply. Im not 100% certain, but you may have to re-boot at that point (long time since i needed to do this)
Then you can use explorer to locate the c:\restore folder
(if you cant see it, you need to enable hidden files. In explorer, click on tools, folder options, view and click on the show hidden files and folders option)
Once there, you can delete the files in question.
When you have completed this. remeber to re-enable system restore and re-boot. When the system has come back up it should create a new restore point for you.
NOTE: the above instructions are for Win XP.
…I have Windows ‘‘Me’’… How do I do it on them? ???
This will tell you how.
Thank you Fatboy_JT & Marc57… Thanks to yore good advice and Spybots ‘‘secure shredder’’ tool (this thing can delete practically anything), I got rid of that pesky strange virus once and for all!
Once again I am gratefoul to both of you. :)
