unmountable boot volume error after today's upgrade home edition

Hi,

After updating avast today, my xp sp3 comp displayed the following error from windows in a blue screen.

Unmountable Boot Volume 0x000000ED (0x8A9E78B0, 0xC0000185,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I have tried several times to do a fixboot… of which it states it has been successfully created however the machine does not boot. chkdsk does not complete after initially 25%, latest was hanging at 10%. At the c prompt I tried to bring up the directory of c, and received an error stating it cant create it and display it. Tried the bootcfg command, which is not working either.
I think my file system is corrupt after this last upgrade… now what am I suppose to do… format the hard drive and loose everything I have in there?.. is there anyway to save that hard drive?? please help this is a disaster.

What happened exactly. I did a vscan using avast last night, stopped it after 50% and did a disk cleanup. Avast had a new upgrade available this morning …so I upgraded , when asked to reboot now or later to complete the installation I choose later. Then when I was finish with my work, I selected restart, upon which I was greeted with the error displayed above.

Hi…

I can’t tell you specifically why this happened but here is an option I’ve given to other folks on this board…

If you own a legal copy of your OS (a Microsoft Windows XP CD, I don’t think a restore CD will work in this case,) you can perform a repair install with the instructions listed here, please read the entire page…

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If you don’t have a Windows XP CD but have a restore CD(s) or partition on your hard drive from your computer’s manufacturer (you can verify this by clicking on “My Computer” and seeing if there is a second, smaller partition listed as possibly as “D Drive” and having the title include the word “Recovery.” If so, then that partition and the recovery options can be accessed by tapping a certain key during POST [before you see the Windows XP splash screen on bootup,] the key will vary depending on your computer’s manufacturer,) the setup program may give you a similar or identical option. Please see the manufacturer’s documentation for more information. If this is not possible, call the manufacturer or you can post back here with any questions. In either case, be prepared for a possible loss of data. :frowning:

Hope this helps.

May God Bless you!

Hi all…

Hi,

My daughter has a Inspiron Mini Netbook. This morning she booted it up and it came up the the Blue Scren and the error UNMOUNTABLE_ BOOT_VOLUME and a Stop: 0x000000ED error.

She was using the machine last night to play music on from my USB stick (No Viruses - Checked) This morning tried to start the machine and it shows the XP start screen and then goes to the blue screen. (she also updated avst last night what she said)

As far as I can determine, there has been no changes after the avast updation since last night when it worked perfectly fine.

There is much on the net about recovering, using the XP CD and installing again etc, but this is a Netbook, NO CD or DVD. It came with no OS CD or DVD, how can I recover this. I hope I am not expected to throw it out as it cost €350 from PC World 198 months ago. The warranty ran out 6 months ago so I have no recourse to Dell, but I would like to know how to get the machine back up and running.

i also tried this: with my xp usb stick
“CHKDSK”, “CHKDSK /p”, “CHKDSK /r” and “fixboot”. Then I entered “exit” and restart my computer. The error message is still here.

Please someone help as I am very frustrated and all my daughters course work is on the machine for her Exams at the end of this school year.

Thanks in advance,
